Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding--because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin--1Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God's will.2That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.3For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
They are surprised that you don't join them in the same flood of wild living--and they slander you.4Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
They will give an account to the one who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.5Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead, so that, although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards, they might live in the spirit according to God's standards.6For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
The end of all things is near; therefore, be alert and sober-minded for prayer.7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
Above all, maintain constant love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.8And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
Be hospitable to one another without complaining.9Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.10As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God's words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.11If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Dear friends, don't be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you.12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.13But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.14If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.15But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name.16Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
For the time has come for judgment to begin with God's household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?17For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?18And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
So then, let those who suffer according to God's will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator while doing what is good.19Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
