If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, | 1If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, |
make my joy complete by thinking the same way, having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. | 2Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. |
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. | 3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. |
Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. | 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. |
Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, | 5Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: |
who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. | 6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: |
Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, | 7But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: |
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death--even to death on a cross. | 8And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. |
For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, | 9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: |
so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow--in heaven and on earth and under the earth-- | 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; |
and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. | 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. |
Therefore, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. | 12Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. |
For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose. | 13For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. |
Do everything without grumbling and arguing, | 14Do all things without murmurings and disputings: |
so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world, | 15That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; |
by holding firm to the word of life. Then I can boast in the day of Christ that I didn't run or labor for nothing. | 16Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. |
But even if I am poured out as a drink offering on the sacrificial service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. | 17Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. |
In the same way you should also be glad and rejoice with me. | 18For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me. |
Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon so that I too may be encouraged by news about you. | 19But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. |
For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely care about your interests; | 20For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. |
all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. | 21For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. |
But you know his proven character, because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a son with a father. | 22But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel. |
Therefore, I hope to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. | 23Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me. |
I am confident in the Lord that I myself will also come soon. | 24But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly. |
But I considered it necessary to send you Epaphroditus--my brother, coworker, and fellow soldier, as well as your messenger and minister to my need-- | 25Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. |
since he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you heard that he was sick. | 26For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. |
Indeed, he was so sick that he nearly died. However, God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. | 27For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. |
For this reason, I am very eager to send him so that you may rejoice again when you see him and I may be less anxious. | 28I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. |
Therefore, welcome him in the Lord with great joy and hold people like him in honor, | 29Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation: |
because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up what was lacking in your ministry to me. | 30Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me. |
