Paul, called as an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, and Sosthenes our brother: | 1From Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes, our brother, |
To the church of God at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord--both their Lord and ours. | 2to the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. |
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! |
I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus, | 4I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus. |
that you were enriched in him in every way, in all speech and all knowledge. | 5For you were made rich in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge-- |
In this way, the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you, | 6just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you-- |
so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 7so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
God is faithful; you were called by him into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. | 9God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord. |
Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction. | 10I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree together, to end your divisions, and to be united by the same mind and purpose. |
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters, by members of Chloe's people, that there is rivalry among you. | 11For members of Chloe's household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters, that there are quarrels among you. |
What I am saying is this: One of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." | 12Now I mean this, that each of you is saying, "I am with Paul," or "I am with Apollos," or "I am with Cephas," or "I am with Christ." |
Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in Paul's name? | 13Is Christ divided? Paul wasn't crucified for you, was he? Or were you in fact baptized in the name of Paul? |
I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, | 14I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, |
so that no one can say you were baptized in my name. | 15so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name! |
I did, in fact, baptize the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't recall if I baptized anyone else. | 16(I also baptized the household of Stephanus. Otherwise, I do not remember whether I baptized anyone else.) |
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ will not be emptied of its effect. | 17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--and not with clever speech, so that the cross of Christ would not become useless. |
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved. | 18For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. |
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the intelligence of the intelligent. | 19For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent." |
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made the world's wisdom foolish? | 20Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? |
For since, in God's wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached. | 21For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. |
For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom, | 22For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, |
but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. | 23but we preach about a crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. |
Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, | 24But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. |
because God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength. | 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. |
Brothers and sisters, consider your calling: Not many were wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth. | 26Think about the circumstances of your call, brothers and sisters. Not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position. |
Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. | 27But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. |
God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world--what is viewed as nothing--to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, | 28God chose what is low and despised in the world, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, |
so that no one may boast in his presence. | 29so that no one can boast in his presence. |
It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us--our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, | 30He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, |
in order that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. | 31so that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord." |
