Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples | 1When they came near Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples on ahead |
and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. | 2and told them, "Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you go into it, you will find a colt tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it, and bring it along. |
If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” | 3If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?,' say, 'The Lord needs it,' and he will send it back here at once." |
And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. | 4So they went and found the colt outside in the street tied up next to a doorway. While they were untying it, |
And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” | 5some men standing there asked them, "What are you doing untying that colt?" |
And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. | 6The disciples told them what Jesus had said, and the men let them go. |
And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. | 7They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their coats on it, and he sat on it. |
And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. | 8Many people spread their coats on the road, while others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. |
And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! | 9Those who went ahead and those who followed him were shouting, "Hosanna! How blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! |
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” | 10How blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" |
And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. | 11Then Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the Temple and looked around at everything. Since it was already late, he went out with the Twelve to Bethany. |
On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. | 12The next day, as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus became hungry. |
And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. | 13Seeing in the distance a fig tree covered with leaves, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing except leaves because it wasn't the season for figs. |
And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it. | 14So he told it, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again!" Now his disciples were listening to this. |
And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. | 15When they came to Jerusalem, he went into the Temple and began to throw out those who were selling and those who were buying in the Temple. He overturned the moneychangers' tables and the chairs of those who sold doves. |
And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. | 16He wouldn't even let anyone carry a vessel through the Temple. |
And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” | 17Then he began to teach them: "It is written, is it not, 'My house is to be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you've turned it into a hideout for bandits!" |
And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. | 18When the high priests and elders heard this, they began to look for a way to kill him, because they were afraid of him, since the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. |
And when evening came they went out of the city. | 19When evening came, Jesus and his disciples would leave the city. |
As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. | 20While they were walking along early the next morning, they saw the fig tree dried up to its roots. |
And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” | 21Remembering what Jesus had said, Peter pointed out to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has dried up!" |
And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. | 22Jesus told his disciples, "Have faith in God! |
Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. | 23I tell all of you with certainty, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' if he doesn't doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. |
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. | 24That is why I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours. |
And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” | 25"Whenever you stand up to pray, forgive whatever you have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins. |
| 26But if you do not forgive, your Father in heaven will not forgive your sins." |
And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, | 27Then they went into Jerusalem again. While Jesus was walking in the Temple, the high priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him |
and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” | 28and asked him, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority to do them?" |
Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. | 29Jesus told them, "I'll ask you one question. Answer me, and then I'll tell you by what authority I'm doing these things. |
Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.” | 30Was John's authority to baptize from heaven or from humans? Answer me." |
And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ | 31They began discussing this among themselves. "If we say, 'From heaven,' he'll say, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' |
But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. | 32But if we say, 'From humans'…?" They were afraid of the crowd, because everyone really thought John was a prophet. |
So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” | 33So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then Jesus told them, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I'm doing these things." |
