English Standard Version | NET Bible |
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” | 1Now the serpent was more shrewd than any of the wild animals that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Is it really true that God said, 'You must not eat from any tree of the orchard'?" |
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, | 2The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit from the trees of the orchard; |
but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” | 3but concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the orchard God said, 'You must not eat from it, and you must not touch it, or else you will die.'" |
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. | 4The serpent said to the woman, "Surely you will not die, |
For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” | 5for God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will open and you will be like divine beings who know good and evil." |
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. | 6When the woman saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. |
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. | 7Then the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. |
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. | 8Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God moving about in the orchard at the breezy time of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the orchard. |
But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” | 9But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, "Where are you?" |
And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” | 10The man replied, "I heard you moving about in the orchard, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid." |
He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” | 11And the LORD God said, "Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" |
The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” | 12The man said, "The woman whom you gave me, she gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate it." |
Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” | 13So the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" And the woman replied, "The serpent tricked me, and I ate." |
The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. | 14The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all the wild beasts and all the living creatures of the field! On your belly you will crawl and dust you will eat all the days of your life. |
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” | 15And I will put hostility between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring; her offspring will attack your head, and you will attack her offspring's heel." |
To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.” | 16To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your labor pains; with pain you will give birth to children. You will want to control your husband, but he will dominate you." |
And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; | 17But to Adam he said, "Because you obeyed your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat from it,' cursed is the ground thanks to you; in painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. |
thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. | 18It will produce thorns and thistles for you, but you will eat the grain of the field. |
By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” | 19By the sweat of your brow you will eat food until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you will return." |
The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. | 20The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. |
And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. | 21The LORD God made garments from skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. |
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” | 22And the LORD God said, "Now that the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not be allowed to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." |
therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. | 23So the LORD God expelled him from the orchard in Eden to cultivate the ground from which he had been taken. |
He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life. | 24When he drove the man out, he placed on the eastern side of the orchard in Eden angelic sentries who used the flame of a whirling sword to guard the way to the tree of life. |
