Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. | 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. |
And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. | 19Because Joseph, her husband to be, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce her privately. |
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. | 20When he had contemplated this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” | 21She will give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: | 22This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: |
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). | 23"Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him Emmanuel," which means "God with us." |
When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, | 24When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord told him. He took his wife, |
but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. | 25but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he named Jesus. |
