The Birth of Jesus the Messiah |
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. | 18This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. |
And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. | 19Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. |
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. | 20As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. |
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” | 21And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” |
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: | 22All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: |
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). | 23“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” |
When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. |
but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. | 25But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. |
