Psalm 38
ESV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionNew Living Translation
O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath!1O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage!
For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me.2Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me.
There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.3Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins.
For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.4My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear.
My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness,5My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins.
I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning.6I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief.
For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.7A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken.
I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart.8I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.
O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.9You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh.
My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.10My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind.
My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off.11My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance.
Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long.12Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery.
But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth.13But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak.
I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes.14I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply.
But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.15For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O Lord my God.
For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!”16I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.”
For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me.17I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain.
I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.18But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done.
But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully.19I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason.
Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.20They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good.
Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me!21Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God.
Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!22Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior.
