Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
When Jesus had finished this instruction, He departed from Galilee and went to the region of Judea across the Jordan.1Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.
Large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.2And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
Some Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?" 3And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?”
"Haven't you read," He replied, "that He who created them in the beginning made them male and female," 4He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,
and He also said: "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? 5and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate."" 6So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Why then," they asked Him, "did Moses command us to give divorce papers and to send her away?" 7They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?”
He told them, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of the hardness of your hearts. But it was not like that from the beginning. 8He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
And I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery." 9And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
His disciples said to Him, "If the relationship of a man with his wife is like this, it's better not to marry!" 10The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
But He told them, "Not everyone can accept this saying, but only those it has been given to.11But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given.
For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb, there are eunuchs who were made by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way because of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can." 12For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”
Then children were brought to Him so He might put His hands on them and pray. But the disciples rebuked them.13Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people,
Then Jesus said, "Leave the children alone, and don't try to keep them from coming to Me, because the kingdom of heaven is made up of people like this." 14but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”
After putting His hands on them, He went on from there. 15And he laid his hands on them and went away.
Just then someone came up and asked Him, "Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?" 16And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”
"Why do you ask Me about what is good?" He said to him. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."" 17And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”
Which ones?" he asked Him. Jesus answered: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; 18He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
honor your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as yourself. " 19Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
I have kept all these," the young man told Him. "What do I still lack?" 20The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?”
"If you want to be perfect," Jesus said to him, "go, sell your belongings and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me." 21Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
When the young man heard that command, he went away grieving, because he had many possessions. 22When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Then Jesus said to His disciples, "I assure you: It will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven!23And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven.
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked, "Then who can be saved?" 25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”
But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 26But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Then Peter responded to Him, "Look, we have left everything and followed You. So what will there be for us?" 27Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?”
Jesus said to them, "I assure you: In the Messianic Age, when the Son of Man sits on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on 12 thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel. 28Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has left houses, brothers or sisters, father or mother, children, or fields because of My name will receive 100 times more and will inherit eternal life.29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last first. 30But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
