1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai, on the first day of the second month of the second year after Israel's departure from the land of Egypt: "1The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,
2Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of every male one by one.2“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.
3You and Aaron are to register those who are 20 years old or more by their military divisions--everyone who can serve in Israel's army.3From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company.
4A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of his ancestral house.4And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers.
5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: Elizur son of Shedeur from Reuben; 5And these are the names of the men who shall assist you. From Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
6Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai from Simeon; 6from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;
7Nahshon son of Amminadab from Judah; 7from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;
8Nethanel son of Zuar from Issachar; 8from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;
9Eliab son of Helon from Zebulun; 9from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;
10from the sons of Joseph: Elishama son of Ammihud from Ephraim, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur from Manasseh; 10from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
11Abidan son of Gideoni from Benjamin; 11from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
12Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai from Dan; 12from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
13Pagiel son of Ochran from Asher; 13from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;
14Eliasaph son of Deuel from Gad; 14from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;
15Ahira son of Enan from Naphtali. 15from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.”
16These are the men called from the community; they are leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of Israel's clans." 16These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.
17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named,
18and they assembled the whole community on the first day of the second month. They recorded their ancestry by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting one by one the names of those 20 years old or more, 18and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head,
19just as the LORD commanded Moses. He registered them in the Wilderness of Sinai: 19as the LORD commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting one by one the names of every male 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 20The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
21those registered for the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500. 21those listed of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.
22The descendants of Simeon: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, those registered counting one by one the names of every male 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 22Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
23those registered for the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300. 23those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.
24The descendants of Gad: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 24Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
25those registered for the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650. 25those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
26The descendants of Judah: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 26Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
27those registered for the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600. 27those listed of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.
28The descendants of Issachar: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 28Of the people of Issachar, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
29those registered for the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400. 29those listed of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.
30The descendants of Zebulun: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 30Of the people of Zebulun, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
31those registered for the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400. 31those listed of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.
32The descendants of Joseph: The descendants of Ephraim: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 32Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
33those registered for the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500. 33those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.
34The descendants of Manasseh: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 34Of the people of Manasseh, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
35those registered for the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200. 35those listed of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.
36The descendants of Benjamin: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 36Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
37those registered for the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400. 37those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.
38The descendants of Dan: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 38Of the people of Dan, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
39those registered for the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700. 39those listed of the tribe of Dan were 62,700.
40The descendants of Asher: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 40Of the people of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
41those registered for the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500. 41those listed of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.
42The descendants of Naphtali: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, 42Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
43those registered for the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400. 43those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.
44These are the men Moses and Aaron registered, with the assistance of the 12 leaders of Israel; each represented his ancestral house. 44These are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers’ house.
45So all the Israelites 20 years old or more, everyone who could serve in Israel's army, were registered by their ancestral houses. 45So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel—
46All those registered numbered 603,550. 46all those listed were 603,550.
47But the Levites were not registered with them by their ancestral tribe. 47But the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe.
48For the LORD had told Moses: "48For the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
49Do not register or take a census of the tribe of Levi with the other Israelites. 49“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel.
50Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They are to transport the tabernacle and all its articles, take care of it, and camp around it. 50But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle.
51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to stop at a campsite, the Levites are to set it up. Any unauthorized person who comes near it must be put to death." 51When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death.
52The Israelites are to camp by their military divisions, each man with his encampment and under his banner. 52The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard.
53The Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the Israelite community."53But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.”
54The Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 54Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.
