Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus: To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons. 1From Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers and deacons.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you,3I thank my God every time I remember you.
always praying with joy for all of you in my every prayer, 4I always pray with joy in my every prayer for all of you
because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.5because of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.
I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. 6For I am sure of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart, and you are all partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and establishment of the gospel. 7For it is right for me to think this about all of you, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel all of you became partners in God's grace together with me.
For God is my witness, how deeply I miss all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. 8For God is my witness that I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment,9And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight
so that you can approve the things that are superior and can be pure and blameless in the day of Christ,10so that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ,
filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God. 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.
Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has actually resulted in the advance of the gospel,12I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my situation has actually turned out to advance the gospel:
so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is in the cause of Christ. 13The whole imperial guard and everyone else knows that I am in prison for the sake of Christ,
Most of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence from my imprisonment and dare even more to speak the message fearlessly. 14and most of the brothers and sisters, having confidence in the Lord because of my imprisonment, now more than ever dare to speak the word fearlessly.
To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and strife, but others out of good will.15Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill.
These do so out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; 16The latter do so from love because they know that I am placed here for the defense of the gospel.
the others proclaim Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely, seeking to cause me anxiety in my imprisonment.17The former proclaim Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, because they think they can cause trouble for me in my imprisonment.
What does it matter? Just that in every way, whether out of false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed. And in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice18What is the result? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
because I know this will lead to my deliverance through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ.19for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all boldness, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 20My confident hope is that I will in no way be ashamed but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die.
For me, living is Christ and dying is gain.21For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.
Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me; and I don't know which one I should choose. 22Now if I am to go on living in the body, this will mean productive work for me, yet I don't know which I prefer:
I am pressured by both. I have the desire to depart and be with Christ--which is far better--23I feel torn between the two, because I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far,
but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. 24but it is more vital for your sake that I remain in the body.
Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,25And since I am sure of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for the sake of your progress and joy in the faith,
so that, because of me, your confidence may grow in Christ Jesus when I come to you again. 26so that what you can be proud of may increase because of me in Christ Jesus, when I come back to you.
Just one thing: Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, working side by side for the faith that comes from the gospel, 27Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ so that--whether I come and see you or whether I remain absent--I should hear that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, by contending side by side for the faith of the gospel,
not being frightened in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction for them, but of your deliverance--and this is from God. 28and by not being intimidated in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of their destruction, but of your salvation--a sign which is from God.
For it has been given to you on Christ's behalf not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him, 29For it has been granted to you not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for him,
having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I have. 30since you are encountering the same conflict that you saw me face and now hear that I am facing.
