The same thing happened in Iconium; they entered the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.1At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed.
But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers.2But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.
So they stayed there for some time and spoke boldly in reliance on the Lord, who testified to the message of His grace by granting that signs and wonders be performed through them.3So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.
But the people of the city were divided, some siding with the Jews and some with the apostles.4The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.
When an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to assault and stone them, 5There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.
they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian towns called Lystra and Derbe, and to the surrounding countryside.6But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country,
And there they kept evangelizing. 7where they continued to preach the gospel.
In Lystra a man without strength in his feet, lame from birth, and who had never walked, sat8In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked.
and heard Paul speaking. After observing him closely and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 9He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed
Paul said in a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet!" And he jumped up and started to walk around. 10and called out, "Stand up on your feet!" At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in the form of men!"11When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in human form!"
And they started to call Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the main speaker. 12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.
Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the town, brought oxen and garlands to the gates. He, with the crowds, intended to offer sacrifice. 13The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.
The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their robes when they heard this and rushed into the crowd, shouting:"14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting:
Men! Why are you doing these things? We are men also, with the same nature as you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.15"Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.
In past generations He allowed all the nations to go their own way, 16In the past, he let all nations go their own way.
although He did not leave Himself without a witness, since He did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons and satisfying your hearts with food and happiness." 17Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy."
Even though they said these things, they barely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them. 18Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.
Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and when they had won over the crowds and stoned Paul, they dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead.19Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead.
After the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe. 20But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
After they had evangelized that town and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, to Iconium, and to Antioch,21They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch,
strengthening the disciples by encouraging them to continue in the faith and by telling them, "It is necessary to pass through many troubles on our way into the kingdom of God." 22strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said.
When they had appointed elders in every church and prayed with fasting, they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed. 23Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 24After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,
After they spoke the message in Perga, they went down to Attalia. 25and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
From there they sailed back to Antioch where they had been entrusted to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.26From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.
After they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported everything God had done with them and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 27On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.
And they spent a considerable time with the disciples. 28And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.
