| 1On the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and | 1The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, |
| 2Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding as well. | 2and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. |
| 3When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother told Him, "They don't have any wine." | 3The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” |
| 4"What has this concern of yours to do with Me, woman?" Jesus asked. "My hour has not yet come."" | 4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” |
| 5Do whatever He tells you," His mother told the servants. | 5But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” |
| 6Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification. Each contained 20 or 30 gallons. | 6Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. |
| 7"Fill the jars with water," Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. | 7Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, |
| 8Then He said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the chief servant." And they did. | 8he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. |
| 9When the chief servant tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from--though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom | 9When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. |
| 10and told him, "Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people have drunk freely, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now." | 10“A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” |
| 11Jesus performed this first sign in Cana of Galilee. He displayed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. | 11This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. |
| 12After this, He went down to Capernaum, together with His mother, His brothers, and His disciples, and they stayed there only a few days. | 12After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. Jesus Clears the Temple |
| 13The Jewish Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | 13It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. |
| 14In the temple complex He found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and He also found the money changers sitting there. | 14In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. |
| 15After making a whip out of cords, He drove everyone out of the temple complex with their sheep and oxen. He also poured out the money changers' coins and overturned the tables. | 15Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. |
| 16He told those who were selling doves, "Get these things out of here! Stop turning My Father's house into a marketplace!" | 16Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!” |
| 17And His disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for Your house will consume Me. | 17Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.” |
| 18So the Jews replied to Him, "What sign of authority will You show us for doing these things?" | 18But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.” |
| 19Jesus answered, "Destroy this sanctuary, and I will raise it up in three days." | 19 “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” |
| 20Therefore the Jews said, "This sanctuary took 46 years to build, and will You raise it up in three days?" | 20“What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?” |
| 21But He was speaking about the sanctuary of His body. | 21But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body. |
| 22So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. And they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made. | 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said. Jesus and Nicodemus |
| 23While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many trusted in His name when they saw the signs He was doing. | 23Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. |
| 24Jesus, however, would not entrust Himself to them, since He knew them all | 24But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. |
| 25and because He did not need anyone to testify about man; for He Himself knew what was in man. | 25No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart. |
