Exodus 20
ISV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
Then God spoke all these words:1And God spoke all these words, saying,
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 2“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You are to have no other gods besides me.3“You shall have no other gods before me.
"You are not to make for yourselves an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above, or on earth below, or in the water under the earth. 4“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
You are not to bow down to them in worship or serve them, because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of the parents to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
but showing gracious love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.6but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
"You are not to misuse the name of the LORD your God, because the LORD will not leave the one who misuses his name unpunished.7“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
"Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy.8“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Yu are to labor and do all your work during six days, 9Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You are not to do any work—neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your livestock, nor the alien who is within your gates— 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.
because the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, in six days, then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.12“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
"You are not to commit murder.13“You shall not murder.
"You are not to commit adultery.14“You shall not commit adultery.
"You are not to steal.15“You shall not steal.
"You are not to testify falsely against your neighbor.16“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
"You are not to covet your neighbor's house. You are not to covet your neighbor's wife, his male or female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."17“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
All the people experienced the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram's horn, and the smoking mountain. And as the people experienced it, they trembled and stood at a distance. 18Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off
They told Moses, "You speak to us and we will listen, but don't let God speak with us, or we may die.19and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”
Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you may fear him in order that you don't sin." 20Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”
Then the people stood at a distance, and Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.21The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
The LORD told Moses, "This is what you are to say to the Israelis, 'You have seen for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven. 22And the LORD said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.
You are not to make gods of silver alongside me, nor are you to make for yourselves gods of gold. 23You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.
You are to make an altar of earth for me, and you are to sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep, and your cattle. Everywhere I cause my name to be remembered, I'll come to you and bless you. 24An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.
If you make an altar of stone for me, you must not build it of cut stones, because if you strike it with your chisel, you will profane it. 25If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it.
You are not to ascend to my altar on steps, so that your nakedness may not be exposed on it.'"26And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.’
