When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the disciples and encouraged them. Then he said goodbye to them and left to go to Macedonia. 1After the uproar was over, Paul sent for the disciples, encouraged them, and after saying good-bye, departed to go to Macedonia.
He went through those regions and encouraged the people with everything he had to say. Then he went to Greece 2And when he had passed through those areas and exhorted them at length, he came to Greece
and stayed there for three months. When he was about to sail for Syria, a plot was initiated against him by the Jews, so he decided to go back through Macedonia. 3and stayed three months. When he was about to set sail for Syria, a plot was devised against him by the Jews, so a decision was made to go back through Macedonia.
He was accompanied by Sopater (the son of Pyrrhus) from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 4He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.
These men went on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas. 5These men went on ahead and waited for us in Troas,
After the Festival of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi, and days later we joined them in Troas and stayed there for seven days.6but we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread. In five days we reached them at Troas, where we spent seven days.
On the first day of the week, when we had met to break bread, Paul began to address the people. Since he intended to leave the next day, he went on speaking until midnight. 7On the first day of the week, we assembled to break bread. Paul spoke to them, and since he was about to depart the next day, he extended his message until midnight.
Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 8There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were assembled,
A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in a window, began to sink off into a deep sleep as Paul kept speaking longer and longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead. 9and a young man named Eutychus was sitting on a window sill and sank into a deep sleep as Paul kept on speaking. When he was overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.
But Paul went down, bent over him, took him into his arms, and said, "Stop being alarmed, because he's still alive." 10But Paul went down, fell on him, embraced him, and said, "Don't be alarmed, for his life is in him!"
Then he went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He talked with them for a long time, until dawn, and then left. 11After going upstairs, breaking the bread, and eating, Paul conversed a considerable time until dawn. Then he left.
They took the young man away alive and were greatly relieved.12They brought the boy home alive and were greatly comforted.
We proceeded to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we intended to pick up Paul. He had arranged it this way, since he had planned to travel there on foot. 13Then we went on ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, intending to take Paul on board there. For these were his instructions, since he himself was going by land.
When he met us in Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene. 14When he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene.
We sailed from there and on the following day arrived off Chios. The next day, we crossed over to Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The day after that, we came to Miletus. 15Sailing from there, the next day we arrived off Chios. The following day we crossed over to Samos, and the day after, we came to Miletus.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in Asia, as he was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost, if that was possible.16For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so he would not have to spend time in Asia, because he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.
From Miletus he sent messengers to Ephesus to ask the elders of the church to meet with him. 17Now from Miletus, he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.
When they came to him, he told them, "You know how I lived among you the entire time from the first day I set foot in Asia. 18And when they came to him, he said to them: "You know, from the first day I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time--
I served the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. 19serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with the trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews--
I never shrank from telling you anything that would help you nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house. 20and that I did not shrink back from proclaiming to you anything that was profitable or from teaching it to you in public and from house to house.
I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus.21I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus."
And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 22And now I am on my way to Jerusalem, bound in my spirit, not knowing what I will encounter there,
except that in town after town the Holy Spirit assures me that imprisonment and suffering are waiting for me. 23except that in town after town the Holy Spirit testifies to me that chains and afflictions are waiting for me.
But I don't place any value on my life, if only I can finish my race and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.24But I count my life of no value to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God's grace."
"Now I know that none of you among whom I traveled preaching about the kingdom will ever see my face again. 25And now I know that none of you will ever see my face again--everyone I went about preaching the kingdom to.
I therefore declare to you today that I'm not responsible for the blood of any of you, 26Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of everyone's blood,
because I never shrank from telling you the whole plan of God. 27for I did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole plan of God.
Pay attention to yourselves and to the entire flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to be shepherds of God's church, which he acquired with his own blood. 28Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock that the Holy Spirit has appointed you to as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.
I know that when I'm gone, savage wolves will come among you and not spare the flock. 29I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
Indeed, some of your own men will arise and distort the truth in order to lure the disciples into following them. 30And men will rise up from your own number with deviant doctrines to lure the disciples into following them.
So be alert! Remember that for three years, night and day, I never stopped tearfully warning each of you.31Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning each one of you with tears."
"I'm now entrusting you to God and to the message of his grace, which is able to build you up and secure for you an inheritance among all who are sanctified. 32And now I commit you to God and to the message of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.
I never desired anyone's silver, gold, or clothes. 33I have not coveted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.
You yourselves know that I worked with my own hands to support myself and those who were with me. 34You yourselves know that these hands have provided for my needs and for those who were with me.
In every way I showed you that by working hard like this we should help the weak and remember the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" 35In every way I've shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
When Paul had said this, he knelt down and prayed with all of them. 36After he said this, he knelt down and prayed with all of them.
All of them cried and cried as they put their arms around Paul and kissed him affectionately. 37There was a great deal of weeping by everyone. They embraced Paul and kissed him,
They were especially sorrowful because of what he had said—that they would never see his face again. Then they took him to the ship.38grieving most of all over his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they escorted him to the ship.
