When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the disciples and encouraged them. Then he said goodbye to them and left to go to Macedonia. 1After the disturbance had ended, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them and saying farewell, he left to go to Macedonia.
He went through those regions and encouraged the people with everything he had to say. Then he went to Greece 2After he had gone through those regions and spoken many words of encouragement to the believers there, he came to Greece,
and stayed there for three months. When he was about to sail for Syria, a plot was initiated against him by the Jews, so he decided to go back through Macedonia. 3where he stayed for three months. Because the Jews had made a plot against him as he was intending to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.
He was accompanied by Sopater (the son of Pyrrhus) from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 4Paul was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia.
These men went on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas. 5These had gone on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas.
After the Festival of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi, and days later we joined them in Troas and stayed there for seven days.6We sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and within five days we came to the others in Troas, where we stayed for seven days.
On the first day of the week, when we had met to break bread, Paul began to address the people. Since he intended to leave the next day, he went on speaking until midnight. 7On the first day of the week, when we met to break bread, Paul began to speak to the people, and because he intended to leave the next day, he extended his message until midnight.
Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 8(Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.)
A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in a window, began to sink off into a deep sleep as Paul kept speaking longer and longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead. 9A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, was sinking into a deep sleep while Paul continued to speak for a long time. Fast asleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.
But Paul went down, bent over him, took him into his arms, and said, "Stop being alarmed, because he's still alive." 10But Paul went down, threw himself on the young man, put his arms around him, and said, "Do not be distressed, for he is still alive!"
Then he went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He talked with them for a long time, until dawn, and then left. 11Then Paul went back upstairs, and after he had broken bread and eaten, he talked with them a long time, until dawn. Then he left.
They took the young man away alive and were greatly relieved.12They took the boy home alive and were greatly comforted.
We proceeded to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we intended to pick up Paul. He had arranged it this way, since he had planned to travel there on foot. 13We went on ahead to the ship and put out to sea for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there, for he had arranged it this way. He himself was intending to go there by land.
When he met us in Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene. 14When he met us in Assos, we took him aboard and went to Mitylene.
We sailed from there and on the following day arrived off Chios. The next day, we crossed over to Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The day after that, we came to Miletus. 15We set sail from there, and on the following day we arrived off Chios. The next day we approached Samos, and the day after that we arrived at Miletus.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in Asia, as he was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost, if that was possible.16For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so as not to spend time in the province of Asia, for he was hurrying to arrive in Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost.
From Miletus he sent messengers to Ephesus to ask the elders of the church to meet with him. 17From Miletus he sent a message to Ephesus, telling the elders of the church to come to him.
When they came to him, he told them, "You know how I lived among you the entire time from the first day I set foot in Asia. 18When they arrived, he said to them, "You yourselves know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I set foot in the province of Asia,
I served the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. 19serving the Lord with all humility and with tears, and with the trials that happened to me because of the plots of the Jews.
I never shrank from telling you anything that would help you nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house. 20You know that I did not hold back from proclaiming to you anything that would be helpful, and from teaching you publicly and from house to house,
I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus.21testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.
And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 22And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem without knowing what will happen to me there,
except that in town after town the Holy Spirit assures me that imprisonment and suffering are waiting for me. 23except that the Holy Spirit warns me in town after town that imprisonment and persecutions are waiting for me.
But I don't place any value on my life, if only I can finish my race and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.24But I do not consider my life worth anything to myself, so that I may finish my task and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God's grace.
"Now I know that none of you among whom I traveled preaching about the kingdom will ever see my face again. 25"And now I know that none of you among whom I went around proclaiming the kingdom will see me again.
I therefore declare to you today that I'm not responsible for the blood of any of you, 26Therefore I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of you all.
because I never shrank from telling you the whole plan of God. 27For I did not hold back from announcing to you the whole purpose of God.
Pay attention to yourselves and to the entire flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to be shepherds of God's church, which he acquired with his own blood. 28Watch out for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son.
I know that when I'm gone, savage wolves will come among you and not spare the flock. 29I know that after I am gone fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
Indeed, some of your own men will arise and distort the truth in order to lure the disciples into following them. 30Even from among your own group men will arise, teaching perversions of the truth to draw the disciples away after them.
So be alert! Remember that for three years, night and day, I never stopped tearfully warning each of you.31Therefore be alert, remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning each one of you with tears.
"I'm now entrusting you to God and to the message of his grace, which is able to build you up and secure for you an inheritance among all who are sanctified. 32And now I entrust you to God and to the message of his grace. This message is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
I never desired anyone's silver, gold, or clothes. 33I have desired no one's silver or gold or clothing.
You yourselves know that I worked with my own hands to support myself and those who were with me. 34You yourselves know that these hands of mine provided for my needs and the needs of those who were with me.
In every way I showed you that by working hard like this we should help the weak and remember the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" 35By all these things, I have shown you that by working in this way we must help the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
When Paul had said this, he knelt down and prayed with all of them. 36When he had said these things, he knelt down with them all and prayed.
All of them cried and cried as they put their arms around Paul and kissed him affectionately. 37They all began to weep loudly, and hugged Paul and kissed him,
They were especially sorrowful because of what he had said—that they would never see his face again. Then they took him to the ship.38especially saddened by what he had said, that they were not going to see him again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
