Sometime later, God tested Abraham. He called out to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered. | 1After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!"" Here I am," he answered." |
God said, "Please take your son, your unique son whom you love—Isaac—and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him as a burnt offering there on one of the mountains that I will point out to you." | 2Take your son," He said, "your only son Isaac, whom you love, go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." |
So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his male servants with him, along with his son Isaac. He cut the wood for the burnt offering and set out to go to the place about which God had spoken to him. | 3So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his young men and his son Isaac. He split wood for a burnt offering and set out to go to the place God had told him about. |
On the third day he looked ahead and saw the place from a distance. | 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. |
Abraham ordered his two servants, "Both of you are to stay here with the donkey. Now as for the youth and me, we'll go up there, we'll worship, and then we'll return to you." | 5Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we'll come back to you." |
Then Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. Abraham carried the fire and the knife. And so the two of them went on together. | 6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. In his hand he took the fire and the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together. |
Isaac addressed his father Abraham: "My father!" "I'm here, my son," Abraham replied. Isaac asked, "The fire and the wood are here, but where's the lamb for the burnt offering?" | 7Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, "My father." And he replied, "Here I am, my son." Isaac said, "The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" |
Abraham answered, "God will provide himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." The two of them went on together | 8Abraham answered, "God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." Then the two of them walked on together. |
and came to the place about which God had spoken. Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood, tied up his son Isaac, and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. | 9When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. |
Then he stretched out his hand and grabbed the knife to slaughter his son. | 10Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. |
Just then, an angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven and said, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered. | 11But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" He replied, "Here I am." |
"Don't lay your hand on the youth!" he said. "Don't do anything to him, because I've just demonstrated that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only unique one, from me." | 12Then He said, "Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from Me." |
Then Abraham looked up and behind him to see a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So Abraham went over, grabbed the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. | 13Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. |
Abraham named that place, "The LORD Will Provide," as it is told this day, "On the LORD's mountain, he will provide." | 14And Abraham named that place The LORD Will Provide, so today it is said: "It will be provided on the LORD's mountain." |
The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven | 15Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven |
and said, "I have taken an oath to swear by myself," declares the LORD, "that since you have carried this out and have not withheld your only unique son, | 16and said, "By Myself I have sworn," this is the LORD's declaration: "Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your only son, |
I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in heaven and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the gates of their enemies. | 17I will indeed bless you and make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies. |
Furthermore, through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my command." | 18And all the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring because you have obeyed My command." |
After this, Abraham returned to his servants and they set out together for Beer-sheba, where Abraham settled. | 19Abraham went back to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beer-sheba. And Abraham settled in Beer-sheba. |
Now after these things somebody told Abraham, "Look, Milcah has given birth to sons for your brother Nahor. | 20Now after these things Abraham was told, "Milcah also has borne sons to your brother Nahor: |
Uz is his firstborn, Buz is his brother, and Kemuel is the father of Aram, | 21Uz his firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel the father of Aram, |
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." | 22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." |
Bethuel fathered Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Nahor, Abraham's brother. | 23And Bethuel fathered Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight to Nahor, Abraham's brother. |
Also, his concubine Reumah gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. | 24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. |
