Sometime later, God tested Abraham. He called out to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.1And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
God said, "Please take your son, your unique son whom you love—Isaac—and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him as a burnt offering there on one of the mountains that I will point out to you."2And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his male servants with him, along with his son Isaac. He cut the wood for the burnt offering and set out to go to the place about which God had spoken to him. 3And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
On the third day he looked ahead and saw the place from a distance.4Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
Abraham ordered his two servants, "Both of you are to stay here with the donkey. Now as for the youth and me, we'll go up there, we'll worship, and then we'll return to you." 5And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
Then Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. Abraham carried the fire and the knife. And so the two of them went on together.6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
Isaac addressed his father Abraham: "My father!" "I'm here, my son," Abraham replied. Isaac asked, "The fire and the wood are here, but where's the lamb for the burnt offering?"7And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Abraham answered, "God will provide himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." The two of them went on together 8And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
and came to the place about which God had spoken. Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood, tied up his son Isaac, and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. 9And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
Then he stretched out his hand and grabbed the knife to slaughter his son.10And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
Just then, an angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven and said, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered.11And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
"Don't lay your hand on the youth!" he said. "Don't do anything to him, because I've just demonstrated that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only unique one, from me."12And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
Then Abraham looked up and behind him to see a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So Abraham went over, grabbed the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
Abraham named that place, "The LORD Will Provide," as it is told this day, "On the LORD's mountain, he will provide." 14And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 15And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
and said, "I have taken an oath to swear by myself," declares the LORD, "that since you have carried this out and have not withheld your only unique son, 16And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in heaven and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the gates of their enemies. 17That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
Furthermore, through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my command."18And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
After this, Abraham returned to his servants and they set out together for Beer-sheba, where Abraham settled.19So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
Now after these things somebody told Abraham, "Look, Milcah has given birth to sons for your brother Nahor. 20And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;
Uz is his firstborn, Buz is his brother, and Kemuel is the father of Aram, 21Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." 22And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.
Bethuel fathered Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 23And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
Also, his concubine Reumah gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.24And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
