Sometime later, God tested Abraham. He called out to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.1Some time after these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" Abraham replied.
God said, "Please take your son, your unique son whom you love—Isaac—and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him as a burnt offering there on one of the mountains that I will point out to you."2God said, "Take your son--your only son, whom you love, Isaac--and go to the land of Moriah! Offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will indicate to you."
So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his male servants with him, along with his son Isaac. He cut the wood for the burnt offering and set out to go to the place about which God had spoken to him. 3Early in the morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took two of his young servants with him, along with his son Isaac. When he had cut the wood for the burnt offering, he started out for the place God had spoken to him about.
On the third day he looked ahead and saw the place from a distance.4On the third day Abraham caught sight of the place in the distance.
Abraham ordered his two servants, "Both of you are to stay here with the donkey. Now as for the youth and me, we'll go up there, we'll worship, and then we'll return to you." 5So he said to his servants, "You two stay here with the donkey while the boy and I go up there. We will worship and then return to you."
Then Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. Abraham carried the fire and the knife. And so the two of them went on together.6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac. Then he took the fire and the knife in his hand, and the two of them walked on together.
Isaac addressed his father Abraham: "My father!" "I'm here, my son," Abraham replied. Isaac asked, "The fire and the wood are here, but where's the lamb for the burnt offering?"7Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father?" "What is it, my son?" he replied. "Here is the fire and the wood," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"
Abraham answered, "God will provide himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." The two of them went on together 8"God will provide for himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son," Abraham replied. The two of them continued on together.
and came to the place about which God had spoken. Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood, tied up his son Isaac, and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. 9When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood on it. Next he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.
Then he stretched out his hand and grabbed the knife to slaughter his son.10Then Abraham reached out his hand, took the knife, and prepared to slaughter his son.
Just then, an angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven and said, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered.11But the LORD's angel called to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.
"Don't lay your hand on the youth!" he said. "Don't do anything to him, because I've just demonstrated that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only unique one, from me."12"Do not harm the boy!" the angel said. "Do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God because you did not withhold your son, your only son, from me."
Then Abraham looked up and behind him to see a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So Abraham went over, grabbed the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 13Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram caught in the bushes by its horns. So he went over and got the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
Abraham named that place, "The LORD Will Provide," as it is told this day, "On the LORD's mountain, he will provide." 14And Abraham called the name of that place "The LORD provides." It is said to this day, "In the mountain of the LORD provision will be made."
The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 15The LORD's angel called to Abraham a second time from heaven
and said, "I have taken an oath to swear by myself," declares the LORD, "that since you have carried this out and have not withheld your only unique son, 16and said, "'I solemnly swear by my own name,' decrees the LORD, 'that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in heaven and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the gates of their enemies. 17I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be as countless as the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the strongholds of their enemies.
Furthermore, through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my command."18Because you have obeyed me, all the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants.'"
After this, Abraham returned to his servants and they set out together for Beer-sheba, where Abraham settled.19Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set out together for Beer Sheba where Abraham stayed.
Now after these things somebody told Abraham, "Look, Milcah has given birth to sons for your brother Nahor. 20After these things Abraham was told, "Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor--
Uz is his firstborn, Buz is his brother, and Kemuel is the father of Aram, 21Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." 22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."
Bethuel fathered Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 23(Now Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.) These were the eight sons Milcah bore to Abraham's brother Nahor.
Also, his concubine Reumah gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore him children--Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
