God, having spoken in former times in fragmentary and varied fashion to our forefathers by the prophets, | 1Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. |
has in these last days spoken to us by a Son whom he appointed to be the heir of everything and through whom he also made the universe. | 2In these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed Him heir of all things and made the universe through Him. |
He is the reflection of God's glory and the exact likeness of his being, and he holds everything together by his powerful word. After he had provided a cleansing from sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Highest Majesty | 3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. |
and became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is better than theirs. | 4So He became higher in rank than the angels, just as the name He inherited is superior to theirs. |
For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son. Today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? | 5For to which of the angels did He ever say, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father, or again, I will be His Father, and He will be My Son? |
And again, when he brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." | 6When He again brings His firstborn into the world, He says, And all God's angels must worship Him. |
Now about the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire." | 7And about the angels He says: He makes His angels winds, and His servants a fiery flame, |
But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of your kingdom is a righteous scepter. | 8but to the Son: Your throne, God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of justice. |
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. That is why God, your God, anointed you rather than your companions with the oil of gladness." | 9You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; this is why God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of joy rather than Your companions. |
And, "In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. | 10And: In the beginning, Lord, You established the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands; |
They will come to an end, but you will remain forever. They will all wear out like clothes. | 11they will perish, but You remain. They will all wear out like clothing; |
You will roll them up like a robe, and they will be changed like clothes. But you remain the same, and your life will never end." | 12You will roll them up like a cloak, and they will be changed like a robe. But You are the same, and Your years will never end. |
But to which of the angels did he ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? | 13Now to which of the angels has He ever said: Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool? |
All of them are spirits on a divine mission, sent to serve those who are about to inherit salvation, aren't they? | 14Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation? |
