Proverbs 20
ISV Parallel KJV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionKing James Bible
Wine causes mocking, and beer causes fights; everyone led astray by them lacks wisdom.1Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
A king's anger is like a lion's roar; anyone who angers him forfeits his life.2The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
Avoiding strife brings a man honor, but every fool is quarrelsome.3It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
A lazy person doesn't plow in the proper season; he looks for a harvest, but there is nothing.4The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
The intentions of a person's heart are deep waters, but a discerning person reveals them.5Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Many claim "I'm a loyal person!" but who can find someone who truly is?6Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
The righteous person lives a life of integrity; happy are his children who follow him!7The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
A king sits on a throne of justice, sifting out all sorts of evil with his glance.8A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Who can say, "My intentions are pure; I am clean from any sin?"9Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
FALSE weights and measures— the LORD surely detests both of them.10Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.
Even a child is known by his actions, whether his deeds are pure and right.11Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
The ear that hears and the eye that sees— the LORD surely made them both.12The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
Do not love sleep or you'll become poor, keep your eyes open and you'll have plenty of food.13Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
"This is bad, bad," says whoever is buying— but then he brags as he walks away after the sale. 14It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
There is an abundance of gold and precious stones, but lips of knowledge are a rare jewel.15There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Take the garment of anyone who puts up collateral for a stranger; hold it in pledge if he does it for an unfamiliar woman.16Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but later his mouth will be full of gravel.17Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Make plans by seeking advice; make war by obtaining guidance.18Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
Whoever spreads gossip betrays confidences; so don't get involved with someone who talks too much.19He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
Whoever curses his father or mother, his lamp will be extinguished in the deepest darkness.20Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
An inheritance quickly obtained at the beginning will not be blessed at the end.21An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
Don't say "I'll avenge that wrong!" Wait on the LORD and he will deliver you.22Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not good.23Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
A man's steps are directed by the LORD; how then can anyone understand his own way?24Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
It is a trap for a person to declare quickly, "This is sacred," and only later to have second thoughts about the vows.25It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
A wise king sifts the wicked, crushing them with the threshing wheel.26A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
A person's spirit is the lamp of the LORD; it searches throughout one's innermost being.27The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Gracious love and truth preserve a king; through love his throne is made secure.28Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
The glory of young men is their strength; and the splendor of elders is their gray hair.29The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
Blows that wound clean away evil; such beatings cleanse the innermost being.30The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
