Imitate me, as I do the Messiah. | 1Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. |
I praise you for remembering everything I told you and for holding to the traditions that I passed on to you. | 2Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. |
Now I want you to realize that the Messiah is the head of every man, and man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of the Messiah. | 3But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. |
Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head, | 4Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. |
and every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, which is the same as having her head shaved. | 5But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. |
So if a woman does not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it is a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her own head. | 6For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. |
A man should not cover his head, because he exists as God's image and glory. But the woman is man's glory. | 7For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. |
For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; | 8For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; |
and man was not created for woman, but woman for man. | 9for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake. |
This is why a woman should have authority over her own head: because of the angels. | 10Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. |
In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man of woman. | 11However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. |
For as woman came from man, so man comes through woman. But everything comes from God. | 12For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. |
Decide for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? | 13Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? |
Nature itself teaches you neither that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair | 14Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, |
nor that hair is a woman's glory, since hair is given as a substitute for coverings. | 15but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. |
But if anyone wants to argue about this, we do not have any custom like this, nor do any of God's churches. | 16But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. |
Now I am not praising you in giving you the following instructions. When you gather, it is not for the better but for the worse. | 17But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. |
For in the first place, I hear that when you gather as a church there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it. | 18For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. |
Of course, there must be factions among you to show which of you are genuine! | 19For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you. |
When you gather in the same place, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. | 20Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, |
For as you eat, each of you rushes to eat his own supper, and one person goes hungry while another gets drunk. | 21for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk. |
You have homes in which to eat and drink, don't you? Or do you despise God's church and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I will not praise you for this! | 22What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you. |
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you—how the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a loaf of bread, | 23For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; |
gave thanks for it, and broke it in pieces, saying, "This is my body that is for you. Keep doing this in memory of me." | 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." |
He did the same with the cup after the supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. As often as you drink from it, keep doing this in memory of me." | 25In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." |
For as often as you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. | 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. |
Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks from the cup in an unworthy manner will be held responsible for the Lord's body and blood. | 27Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. |
A person must examine himself and then eat the bread and drink from the cup, | 28But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. |
because whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. | 29For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. |
That's why so many of you are weak and sick and a considerable number are dying. | 30For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. |
But if we judged ourselves correctly, we would not be judged. | 31But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. |
Now, while we are being judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so we won't be condemned along with the world. | 32But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world. |
Therefore, my brothers, when you gather to eat, wait for each other. | 33So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. |
If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather it may not bring judgment on you. And when I come I will give instructions concerning the other matters. | 34If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come. |
