Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 1After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
His appearance was changed in front of them, his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. 2There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus. 3Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Then Peter told Jesus, "Lord, it's good that we're here! If you want, I'll set up three shelters —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 4Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."
He was still speaking when a bright cloud suddenly overshadowed them. A voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him. Keep on listening to him!"5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.6When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.
But Jesus came up to them and touched them, saying, "Get up, and stop being afraid." 7But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."
When they raised their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus all by himself.8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
On their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Don't tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
So the disciples asked him, "Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"10The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"
He answered them, "Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things. 11Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
But I tell you that Elijah has already come, yet people did not recognize him and treated him just as they pleased. In the same way, the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 12But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
Then the disciples understood that he had been speaking to them about John the Baptist.13Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
As they approached the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, knelt down in front of him, 14When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.
and said, "Sir, have mercy on my son, because he is an epileptic and suffers terribly. Often he falls into fire and often into water. 15"Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn't heal him."16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."
Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and perverted generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!" 17"You unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me."
Then Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed that very hour.18Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
He told them, "Because of your lack of faith. I tell all of you with certainty, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. 20He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting." 21
While they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands. 22When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.
They will kill him, but he will be raised on the third day." Then they were filled with grief.23They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life." And the disciples were filled with grief.
When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came up to Peter and asked, "Your teacher pays the temple tax, doesn't he?"24After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
He answered, "Yes." When Peter went home, Jesus spoke to him first and asked him, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings on the earth collect tolls or tributes? From their own subjects, or from foreigners?"25"Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes--from their own children or from others?"
"From foreigners," he replied. So Jesus told him, "In that case, the subjects are exempt. 26"From others," Peter answered. "Then the children are exempt," Jesus said to him.
However, so that we don't offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Take it and give it to them for me and you."27"But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."
