Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 1Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone.
His appearance was changed in front of them, his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. 2As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.
Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus. 3Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.
Then Peter told Jesus, "Lord, it's good that we're here! If you want, I'll set up three shelters —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 4Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
He was still speaking when a bright cloud suddenly overshadowed them. A voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him. Keep on listening to him!"5But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”
When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.6The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.
But Jesus came up to them and touched them, saying, "Get up, and stop being afraid." 7Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”
When they raised their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus all by himself.8And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus.
On their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Don't tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."9As they went back down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
So the disciples asked him, "Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"10Then his disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes? ”
He answered them, "Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things. 11Jesus replied, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready.
But I tell you that Elijah has already come, yet people did not recognize him and treated him just as they pleased. In the same way, the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.”
Then the disciples understood that he had been speaking to them about John the Baptist.13Then the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist. Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy
As they approached the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, knelt down in front of him, 14At the foot of the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said,
and said, "Sir, have mercy on my son, because he is an epileptic and suffers terribly. Often he falls into fire and often into water. 15“Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn't heal him."16So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”
Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and perverted generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!" 17Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”
Then Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed that very hour.18Then Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and it left him. From that moment the boy was well.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"19Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?”
He told them, "Because of your lack of faith. I tell all of you with certainty, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. 20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible. ” Jesus Again Predicts His Death
But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting." 21
While they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands. 22After they gathered again in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.
They will kill him, but he will be raised on the third day." Then they were filled with grief.23 He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead.” And the disciples were filled with grief. Payment of the Temple Tax
When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came up to Peter and asked, "Your teacher pays the temple tax, doesn't he?"24On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the Temple tax?”
He answered, "Yes." When Peter went home, Jesus spoke to him first and asked him, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings on the earth collect tolls or tributes? From their own subjects, or from foreigners?"25“Yes, he does,” Peter replied. Then he went into the house. But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, “What do you think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered? ”
"From foreigners," he replied. So Jesus told him, "In that case, the subjects are exempt. 26“They tax the people they have conquered,” Peter replied. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free!
However, so that we don't offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Take it and give it to them for me and you."27 However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”
