Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
His appearance was changed in front of them, his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.
Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus.
Then Peter told Jesus, "Lord, it's good that we're here! If you want, I'll set up three shelters —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 4ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ Κύριε καλόν ἐστιν ἡμᾶς ὧδε εἶναι εἰ θέλεις ποιήσω ὧδε τρεῖς σκηνάς σοὶ μίαν καὶ Μωϋσεῖ μίαν καὶ Ἠλίᾳ μίαν
He was still speaking when a bright cloud suddenly overshadowed them. A voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him. Keep on listening to him!"5Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ νεφέλη φωτεινὴ ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα Οὗτός ἐστιν Υἱός μου ἀγαπητός ἐν εὐδόκησα ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ
When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.6καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ἔπεσαν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα
But Jesus came up to them and touched them, saying, "Get up, and stop being afraid." 7Καὶ προσῆλθεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἁψάμενος αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἐγέρθητε καὶ μὴ φοβεῖσθε
When they raised their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus all by himself.8ἐπάραντες δὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν οὐδένα εἶδον εἰ μὴ αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον
On their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Don't tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."9Καὶ καταβαινόντων αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς λέγων Μηδενὶ εἴπητε τὸ ὅραμα ἕως οὗ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγερθῇ
So the disciples asked him, "Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"10Καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Τί οὖν οἱ γραμματεῖς λέγουσιν ὅτι Ἠλίαν δεῖ ἐλθεῖν πρῶτον
He answered them, "Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things. 11 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἠλίας μὲν ἔρχεται καὶ ἀποκαταστήσει πάντα
But I tell you that Elijah has already come, yet people did not recognize him and treated him just as they pleased. In the same way, the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 12λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι Ἠλίας ἤδη ἦλθεν καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνωσαν αὐτὸν ἀλλὰ* ἐποίησαν ἐν αὐτῷ ὅσα ἠθέλησαν οὕτως καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μέλλει πάσχειν ὑπ’ αὐτῶν
Then the disciples understood that he had been speaking to them about John the Baptist.13τότε συνῆκαν οἱ μαθηταὶ ὅτι περὶ Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς
As they approached the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, knelt down in front of him, 14Καὶ ἐλθόντων πρὸς τὸν ὄχλον προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἄνθρωπος γονυπετῶν αὐτὸν
and said, "Sir, have mercy on my son, because he is an epileptic and suffers terribly. Often he falls into fire and often into water. 15καὶ λέγων Κύριε ἐλέησόν μου τὸν υἱόν ὅτι σεληνιάζεται καὶ κακῶς πάσχει* πολλάκις γὰρ πίπτει εἰς τὸ πῦρ καὶ πολλάκις εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ
I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn't heal him."16καὶ προσήνεγκα αὐτὸν τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν αὐτὸν θεραπεῦσαι
Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and perverted generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!" 17Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν γενεὰ ἄπιστος καὶ διεστραμμένη ἕως πότε μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἔσομαι ἕως πότε ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν φέρετέ μοι αὐτὸν ὧδε
Then Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed that very hour.18καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ ἐθεραπεύθη παῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"19Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ κατ’ ἰδίαν εἶπον Διὰ τί ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτό
He told them, "Because of your lack of faith. I tell all of you with certainty, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. 20 δὲ λέγει αὐτοῖς Διὰ τὴν ὀλιγοπιστίαν ὑμῶν ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐὰν ἔχητε πίστιν ὡς κόκκον σινάπεως ἐρεῖτε τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ Μετάβα ἔνθεν ἐκεῖ καὶ μεταβήσεται καὶ οὐδὲν ἀδυνατήσει ὑμῖν
But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting." 21⧼Tοῦτο δὲ τὸ γένος οὐκ ἐκπορεύεται εἰ μὴ ἐν προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ⧽
While they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands. 22Συστρεφομένων δὲ αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Μέλλει Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοσθαι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων
They will kill him, but he will be raised on the third day." Then they were filled with grief.23καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται καὶ ἐλυπήθησαν σφόδρα
When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came up to Peter and asked, "Your teacher pays the temple tax, doesn't he?"24Ἐλθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ προσῆλθον οἱ τὰ δίδραχμα λαμβάνοντες τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ εἶπαν διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν οὐ τελεῖ ‹τὰ› δίδραχμα
He answered, "Yes." When Peter went home, Jesus spoke to him first and asked him, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings on the earth collect tolls or tributes? From their own subjects, or from foreigners?"25Λέγει Ναί Καὶ ἐλθόντα εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν προέφθασεν αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦς λέγων Τί σοι δοκεῖ Σίμων οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς ἀπὸ τίνων λαμβάνουσιν τέλη κῆνσον ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων
"From foreigners," he replied. So Jesus told him, "In that case, the subjects are exempt. 26Εἰπόντος δέ Ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἄρα¦Γε ἐλεύθεροί εἰσιν οἱ υἱοί
However, so that we don't offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Take it and give it to them for me and you."27ἵνα δὲ μὴ σκανδαλίσωμεν αὐτούς πορευθεὶς εἰς θάλασσαν βάλε ἄγκιστρον καὶ τὸν ἀναβάντα πρῶτον ἰχθὺν ἆρον καὶ ἀνοίξας τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ εὑρήσεις στατῆρα ἐκεῖνον λαβὼν δὸς αὐτοῖς ἀντὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ
