Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: | 1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James: To those who are the called, loved by God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ. |
Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. | 2May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. |
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. | 3Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write, appealing to you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all. |
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. | 4For some people, who were designated for this judgment long ago, have come in by stealth; they are ungodly, turning the grace of our God into sensuality and denying Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord. |
I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. | 5Now I want to remind you, although you came to know all these things once and for all, that Jesus saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe; |
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. | 6and the angels who did not keep their own position but abandoned their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains in deep darkness for the judgment on the great day. |
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. | 7Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns committed sexual immorality and perversions, and serve as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire. |
Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. | 8In the same way these people--relying on their dreams--defile their flesh, reject authority, and slander glorious ones. |
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. | 9Yet when Michael the archangel was disputing with the devil in an argument about Moses's body, he did not dare utter a slanderous condemnation against him but said, "The Lord rebuke you!" |
But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. | 10But these people blaspheme anything they do not understand. And what they do understand by instinct--like irrational animals--by these things they are destroyed. |
Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. | 11Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, have plunged into Balaam's error for profit, and have perished in Korah's rebellion. |
These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; | 12These people are dangerous reefs at your love feasts as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn--fruitless, twice dead and uprooted. |
Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. | 13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameful deeds; wandering stars for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever. |
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, | 14It was about these that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied: "Look! The Lord comes with tens of thousands of his holy ones |
To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. | 15to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly concerning all the ungodly acts that they have done in an ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh things ungodly sinners have said against him." |
These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. | 16These people are discontented grumblers, living according to their desires; their mouths utter arrogant words, flattering people for their own advantage. |
But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; | 17But you, dear friends, remember what was predicted by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. | 18They told you, "In the end time there will be scoffers living according to their own ungodly desires." |
These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. | 19These people create divisions and are worldly, not having the Spirit. |
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, | 20But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, |
Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. | 21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life. |
And of some have compassion, making a difference: | 22Have mercy on those who waver; |
And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. | 23save others by snatching them from the fire; have mercy on others but with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. |
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, | 24Now to him who is able to protect you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of his glory, without blemish and with great joy, |
To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. | 25to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time, now and forever. Amen. |
