King James Bible | New International Version |
And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, | 1The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, |
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. | 2"Say to the Israelites: 'Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: |
Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat. | 3You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud. |
Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. | 4"'There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. |
And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. | 5The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. |
And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. | 6The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. |
And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. | 7And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. |
Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you. | 8You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you. |
These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. | 9"'Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales. |
And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: | 10But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales--whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water--you are to regard as unclean. |
They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. | 11And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean. |
Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you. | 12Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you. |
And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray, | 13"'These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, |
And the vulture, and the kite after his kind; | 14the red kite, any kind of black kite, |
Every raven after his kind; | 15any kind of raven, |
And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind, | 16the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, |
And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, | 17the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, |
And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle, | 18the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, |
And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat. | 19the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat. |
All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you. | 20"'All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you. |
Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth; | 21There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. |
Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind. | 22Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. |
But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you. | 23But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean. |
And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even. | 24"'You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. |
And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. | 25Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. |
The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean. | 26"'Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean. |
And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even. | 27Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. |
And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you. | 28Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. These animals are unclean for you. |
These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind, | 29"'Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, |
And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole. | 30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. |
These are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even. | 31Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening. |
And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed. | 32When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth. Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean. |
And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it. | 33If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot. |
Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean. | 34Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean. |
And every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you. | 35Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. |
Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean. | 36A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. |
And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean. | 37If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. |
But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you. | 38But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you. |
And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even. | 39"'If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean till evening. |
And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. | 40Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. |
And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten. | 41"'Every creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten. |
Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination. | 42You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean. |
Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby. | 43Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. |
For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. | 44I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. |
For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. | 45I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy. |
This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth: | 46"'These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground. |
To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten. | 47You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.'" |
