You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified?1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.
This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?3Are you so foolish? After starting in the Spirit, are you now finishing in the flesh?
Did you suffer so many things in vain-- if indeed it was in vain?4Have you suffered so much for nothing, if it really was for nothing?
So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?5Does God lavish His Spirit on you and work miracles among you because you practice the law, or because you hear and believe?
Even so Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.6So also, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.7Understand, then, that those who have faith are sons of Abraham.
The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU."8The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and foretold the gospel to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”
So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.9So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM THEM."10All who rely on works of the law are under a curse. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."11Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.”
However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "HE WHO PRACTICES THEM SHALL LIVE BY THEM."12The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE "--13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”
in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.14He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.15Brothers, let me put this in human terms. Even a human covenant, once it is ratified, cannot be canceled or amended.
Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ.16The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say, “and to seeds,” meaning many, but “and to your seed,” meaning One, who is Christ.
What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.17What I mean is this: The law that came 430 years later does not revoke the covenant previously established by God, so as to nullify the promise.
For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.18For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God freely granted it to Abraham through a promise.
Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made.19Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the seed to whom the promise referred. It was administered through angels by a mediator.
Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.20A mediator is unnecessary, however, for only one party; but God is one.
Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.21Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law.
But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.22But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.23Before this faith came, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.
Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.24So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.25Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.27For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.
