Getting up, He went from there to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds gathered around Him again, and, according to His custom, He once more began to teach them.1Then Jesus left that place and went into the region of Judea, beyond the Jordan. Again the crowds came to Him and He taught them, as was His custom.
Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife.2Some Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” they inquired.
And He answered and said to them, "What did Moses command you?"3“What did Moses command you?” He replied.
They said, "Moses permitted a man TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY."4They answered, “Moses permitted a man to write his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away.”
But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.5But Jesus told them, “Moses wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart.
"But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE.6However, from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’
"FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER,7‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,
AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.8and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
"What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."9Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again.10When they were back inside the house, the disciples asked Jesus about this matter.
And He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her;11So He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.
and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery."12And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them.13Now people were bringing the little children to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them, and the disciples rebuked those who brought them.
But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and told them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
"Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all."15Truly I tell you, anyone who does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.16And He took the children in His arms, placed His hands on them, and blessed them.
As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"17As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up and knelt before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.18“Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good except God alone.
"You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"19You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not cheat others, honor your father and mother.’ ”
And he said to Him, "Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up."20“Teacher,” he replied, “all these I have kept from my youth.”
Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."21Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, “There is one thing you lack: Go, sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.22But the man was saddened by these words and went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.
And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, "How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!"23Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!24And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."25It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
They were even more astonished and said to Him, "Then who can be saved?"26They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Who then can be saved?”
Looking at them, Jesus said, "With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You."28Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”
Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake,29“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel
but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.30will fail to receive a hundredfold in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.
"But many who are first will be last, and the last, first."31But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him,32As they were going up the road to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. Again Jesus took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him:
saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.33“Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles,
"They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again."34who will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise again.”
James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, "Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You."35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and declared, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”
And He said to them, "What do you want Me to do for you?"36“What do you want Me to do for you?” He inquired.
They said to Him, "Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory."37They answered, “Grant that one of us may sit at Your right hand and the other at Your left in Your glory.”
But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"38“You do not know what you are asking,” Jesus replied. “Can you drink the cup I will drink, or be baptized with the baptism I will undergo?”
They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.39“We can,” the brothers answered. “You will drink the cup that I drink,” Jesus said, “and you will be baptized with the baptism that I undergo.
"But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."40But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.41When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.
Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.42So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.
"But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;43But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.44and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all.
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road.46Next, they came to Jericho. And as Jesus and His disciples were leaving Jericho with a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road.
When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"48Many people admonished him to be silent, but he cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And Jesus stopped and said, "Call him here." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you."49Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man. “Take courage!” they said. “Get up! He is calling for you.”
Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.50Throwing off his cloak, Bartimaeus jumped up and came to Jesus.
And answering him, Jesus said, "What do you want Me to do for you?" And the blind man said to Him, "Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!"51“What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked. “Rabboni,” said the blind man, “let me see again.”
And Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.52“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
