Hebrews 5
NASB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New American Standard Bible 1995English Standard Version
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins;1For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness;2He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.
and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself.3Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.
And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.4And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU";5So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;
just as He says also in another passage, "YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK."6as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,9And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.10being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.11About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.13for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.14But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
