For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; | 1For every high priest is taken from among the people and appointed to represent them before God, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; | 2He is able to deal compassionately with those who are ignorant and erring, since he also is subject to weakness, |
and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. | 3and for this reason he is obligated to make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. |
And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was. | 4And no one assumes this honor on his own initiative, but only when called to it by God, as in fact Aaron was. |
So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"; | 5So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming high priest, but the one who glorified him was God, who said to him, "You are my Son! Today I have fathered you," |
just as He says also in another passage, "YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK." | 6as also in another place God says, "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek." |
In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. | 7During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion. |
Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. | 8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through the things he suffered. |
And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, | 9And by being perfected in this way, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, |
being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. | 10and he was designated by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek. |
Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. | 11On this topic we have much to say and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing. |
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. | 12For though you should in fact be teachers by this time, you need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God's utterances. You have gone back to needing milk, not solid food. |
For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. | 13For everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced in the message of righteousness, because he is an infant. |
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. | 14But solid food is for the mature, whose perceptions are trained by practice to discern both good and evil. |
