A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart! | 1Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. |
But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling, My steps had almost slipped. | 2But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. |
For I was envious of the arrogant As I saw the prosperity of the wicked. | 3For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. |
For there are no pains in their death, And their body is fat. | 4For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. |
They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like mankind. | 5They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. |
Therefore pride is their necklace; The garment of violence covers them. | 6Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. |
Their eye bulges from fatness; The imaginations of their heart run riot. | 7Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. |
They mock and wickedly speak of oppression; They speak from on high. | 8They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. |
They have set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue parades through the earth. | 9They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. |
Therefore his people return to this place, And waters of abundance are drunk by them. | 10Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. |
They say, "How does God know? And is there knowledge with the Most High?" | 11And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” |
Behold, these are the wicked; And always at ease, they have increased in wealth. | 12Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. |
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure And washed my hands in innocence; | 13All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. |
For I have been stricken all day long And chastened every morning. | 14For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. |
If I had said, "I will speak thus," Behold, I would have betrayed the generation of Your children. | 15If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. |
When I pondered to understand this, It was troublesome in my sight | 16But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, |
Until I came into the sanctuary of God; Then I perceived their end. | 17until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. |
Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. | 18Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. |
How they are destroyed in a moment! They are utterly swept away by sudden terrors! | 19How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! |
Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when aroused, You will despise their form. | 20Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. |
When my heart was embittered And I was pierced within, | 21When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, |
Then I was senseless and ignorant; I was like a beast before You. | 22I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. |
Nevertheless I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. | 23Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. |
With Your counsel You will guide me, And afterward receive me to glory. | 24You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. |
Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. | 25Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. |
My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. | 26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. |
For, behold, those who are far from You will perish; You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You. | 27For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. |
But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, That I may tell of all Your works. | 28But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. |
