Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To the temporary residents dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,3Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.
who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.5You are being protected by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,6You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials
so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;7so that the genuineness of your faith--more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire--may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,8You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy,
obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.9because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries,10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated.
seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.11They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow.
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-- things into which angels long to look.12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Angels desire to look into these things.
Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.13Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be serious and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance.
but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;15But as the One who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct;
because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."16for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.
If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;17And if you address as Father the One who judges impartially based on each one's work, you are to conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your temporary residence.
knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,18For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,
but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.
For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you20He was chosen before the foundation of the world but was revealed at the end of the times for you
who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.21who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart,22By obedience to the truth, having purified yourselves for sincere love of the brothers, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.23since you have been born again--not of perishable seed but of imperishable--through the living and enduring word of God.
For, "ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF,24For All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER." And this is the word which was preached to you.25but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word that was preached as the gospel to you.
