| 1"When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house, | 1If a man marries a woman and she does not please him because he has found something offensive in her, then he may draw up a divorce document, give it to her, and evict her from his house. |
| 2and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man's wife, | 2When she has left him she may go and become someone else's wife. |
| 3and if the latter husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife, | 3If the second husband rejects her and then divorces her, gives her the papers, and evicts her from his house, or if the second husband who married her dies, |
| 4then her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance. | 4her first husband who divorced her is not permitted to remarry her after she has become ritually impure, for that is offensive to the LORD. You must not bring guilt on the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. |
| 5"When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home one year and shall give happiness to his wife whom he has taken. | 5When a man is newly married, he need not go into the army nor be obligated in any way; he must be free to stay at home for a full year and bring joy to the wife he has married. |
| 6"No one shall take a handmill or an upper millstone in pledge, for he would be taking a life in pledge. | 6One must not take either lower or upper millstones as security on a loan, for that is like taking a life itself as security. |
| 7"If a man is caught kidnapping any of his countrymen of the sons of Israel, and he deals with him violently or sells him, then that thief shall die; so you shall purge the evil from among you. | 7If a man is found kidnapping a person from among his fellow Israelites, and regards him as mere property and sells him, that kidnapper must die. In this way you will purge evil from among you. |
| 8"Be careful against an infection of leprosy, that you diligently observe and do according to all that the Levitical priests teach you; as I have commanded them, so you shall be careful to do. | 8Be careful during an outbreak of leprosy to follow precisely all that the Levitical priests instruct you; as I have commanded them, so you should do. |
| 9"Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam on the way as you came out of Egypt. | 9Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam along the way after you left Egypt. |
| 10"When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not enter his house to take his pledge. | 10When you make any kind of loan to your neighbor, you may not go into his house to claim what he is offering as security. |
| 11"You shall remain outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you. | 11You must stand outside and the person to whom you are making the loan will bring out to you what he is offering as security. |
| 12"If he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge. | 12If the person is poor you may not use what he gives you as security for a covering. |
| 13"When the sun goes down you shall surely return the pledge to him, that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you; and it will be righteousness for you before the LORD your God. | 13You must by all means return to him at sunset the item he gave you as security so that he may sleep in his outer garment and bless you for it; it will be considered a just deed by the LORD your God. |
| 14"You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your countrymen or one of your aliens who is in your land in your towns. | 14You must not oppress a lowly and poor servant, whether one from among your fellow Israelites or from the resident foreigners who are living in your land and villages. |
| 15"You shall give him his wages on his day before the sun sets, for he is poor and sets his heart on it; so that he will not cry against you to the LORD and it become sin in you. | 15You must pay his wage that very day before the sun sets, for he is poor and his life depends on it. Otherwise he will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin. |
| 16"Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin. | 16Fathers must not be put to death for what their children do, nor children for what their fathers do; each must be put to death for his own sin. |
| 17"You shall not pervert the justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow's garment in pledge. | 17You must not pervert justice due a resident foreigner or an orphan, or take a widow's garment as security for a loan. |
| 18"But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and that the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing. | 18Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do all this. |
| 19"When you reap your harvest in your field and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. | 19Whenever you reap your harvest in your field and leave some unraked grain there, you must not return to get it; it should go to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow so that the LORD your God may bless all the work you do. |
| 20"When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. | 20When you beat your olive tree you must not repeat the procedure; the remaining olives belong to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow. |
| 21"When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. | 21When you gather the grapes of your vineyard you must not do so a second time; they should go to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow. |
| 22"You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing. | 22Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt; therefore, I am commanding you to do all this. |
