New American Standard Bible 1995New International Version
The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
But He replied to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'2He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,'
"And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?3and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
"An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away.4A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.
And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread.5When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.
And Jesus said to them, "Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."6"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, "He said that because we did not bring any bread."7They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."
But Jesus, aware of this, said, "You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread?8Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
"Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up?9Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
"Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up?10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
"How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."11How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
And they said, "Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."14They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
"I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven."19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ.20Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You."22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"
But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."23Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns."
Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.24Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.25For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?26What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
"For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
"Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."28"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
