| 1Now the leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem, but the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while nine-tenths remained in the other cities. | 1The leaders of the people were living in Jerusalem, the holy city. A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there, too, while the rest stayed where they were. |

| 17and Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who was the leader in beginning the thanksgiving at prayer, and Bakbukiah, the second among his brethren; and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun. | 17Also Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zabdi, a descendant of Asaph, who led in thanksgiving and prayer. | 18All the Levites in the holy city were 284. | 18In all, there were 284 Levites in the holy city. |
| 19Also the gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon and their brethren who kept watch at the gates, were 172. | 19From the gatekeepers: Akkub, Talmon, and 172 of their associates, who guarded the gates. |
| 20The rest of Israel, of the priests and of the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, each on his own inheritance. | 20The other priests, Levites, and the rest of the Israelites lived wherever their family inheritance was located in any of the towns of Judah. |
| 21But the temple servants were living in Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple servants. | 21The Temple servants, however, whose leaders were Ziha and Gishpa, all lived on the hill of Ophel. |
| 22Now the overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Mica, from the sons of Asaph, who were the singers for the service of the house of God. | 22The chief officer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, a descendant of Asaph, whose family served as singers at God’s Temple. |
| 23For there was a commandment from the king concerning them and a firm regulation for the song leaders day by day. | 23Their daily responsibilities were carried out according to the terms of a royal command. |
