Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead.1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
So they prepared a dinner for Jesus there. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table with him.2So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him.
Then Mary took three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus. She then wiped his feet dry with her hair. (Now the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.)3Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was going to betray him) said,4But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked,
"Why wasn't this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?"5“Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?”
(Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)6Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it.
So Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has kept it for the day of my burial.7“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial.
For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!" 8The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.”
Now a large crowd of Judeans learned that Jesus was there, and so they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.9Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was there. And they came not only because of Him, but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus. 11for on account of him many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.
The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.12The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!"13They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written:
"Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey' s colt!"15“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion. See, your King is coming, seated on the colt of a donkey.”
(His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.) 16At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him.
So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it.17Meanwhile, many people continued to testify that they had been with Jesus when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead.
Because they had heard that Jesus had performed this miraculous sign, the crowd went out to meet him.18That is also why the crowd went out to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.
Thus the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!" 19Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”
Now some Greeks were among those who had gone up to worship at the feast.20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.
So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus."21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”
Philip went and told Andrew, and they both went and told Jesus.22Philip relayed this appeal to Andrew, and both of them went and told Jesus.
Jesus replied, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.23But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain.24Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life.25Whoever loves his life will lose it, but whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, My servant will be as well. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
"Now my soul is greatly distressed. And what should I say? 'Father, deliver me from this hour'? No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour.27Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour.
Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."28Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
The crowd that stood there and heard the voice said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to him.29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him.
Jesus said, "This voice has not come for my benefit but for yours.30In response, Jesus said, “This voice was not for My benefit, but yours.
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.31Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out.
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.”
(Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.) 33He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.
Then the crowd responded, "We have heard from the law that the Christ will remain forever. How can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"34The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever. So how can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
Jesus replied, "The light is with you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.35Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said these things, he went away and hid himself from them. 36While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” After Jesus had spoken these things, He went away and was hidden from them.
Although Jesus had performed so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him,37Although Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still did not believe in Him.
so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, "Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said, 39For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says:
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them." 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they cannot see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.”
Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ's glory, and spoke about him. 41Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about Him.
Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess Jesus to be the Christ, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.42Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue.
For they loved praise from men more than praise from God. 43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
But Jesus shouted out, "The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me,44Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me.
and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me.45And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me.
I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness.46I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.
If anyone hears my words and does not obey them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.47As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has a judge; the word I have spoken will judge him at the last day.48There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
For I have not spoken from my own authority, but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me what I should say and what I should speak.49I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it.
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me." 50And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.”
