Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead.1Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
So they prepared a dinner for Jesus there. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table with him.2So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.
Then Mary took three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus. She then wiped his feet dry with her hair. (Now the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.)3Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was going to betray him) said,4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said,
"Why wasn't this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?"5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”
(Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)6He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.
So Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has kept it for the day of my burial.7Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.
For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!" 8For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
Now a large crowd of Judeans learned that Jesus was there, and so they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.9When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,10So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,
for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus. 11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!"13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
"Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey' s colt!"15“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
(His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.) 16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it.17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.
Because they had heard that Jesus had performed this miraculous sign, the crowd went out to meet him.18The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.
Thus the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!" 19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
Now some Greeks were among those who had gone up to worship at the feast.20Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks.
So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus."21So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
Philip went and told Andrew, and they both went and told Jesus.22Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.
Jesus replied, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.23And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain.24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life.25Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 26If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
"Now my soul is greatly distressed. And what should I say? 'Father, deliver me from this hour'? No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour.27“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.
Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
The crowd that stood there and heard the voice said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to him.29The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”
Jesus said, "This voice has not come for my benefit but for yours.30Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine.
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.31Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
(Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.) 33He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
Then the crowd responded, "We have heard from the law that the Christ will remain forever. How can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"34So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
Jesus replied, "The light is with you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.35So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said these things, he went away and hid himself from them. 36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
Although Jesus had performed so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him,37Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him,
so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, "Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"38so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said, 39Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them." 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.”
Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ's glory, and spoke about him. 41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.
Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess Jesus to be the Christ, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.42Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue;
For they loved praise from men more than praise from God. 43for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.
But Jesus shouted out, "The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me,44And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.
and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me.45And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.
I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness.46I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
If anyone hears my words and does not obey them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.47If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has a judge; the word I have spoken will judge him at the last day.48The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
For I have not spoken from my own authority, but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me what I should say and what I should speak.49For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak.
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me." 50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
