A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! 1A Davidic psalm for remembrance. LORD, do not punish me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.
For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. 2For Your arrows have sunk into me, and Your hand has pressed down on me.
My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. 3There is no health in my body because of Your indignation; there is no strength in my bones because of my sin.
For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. 4For my sins have flooded over my head; they are a burden too heavy for me to bear.
My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. 5My wounds are foul and festering because of my foolishness.
I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. 6I am bent over and brought low; all day long I go around in mourning.
For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. 7For my loins are full of burning pain, and there is no health in my body.
I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. 8I am faint and severely crushed; I groan because of the anguish of my heart.
O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. 9Lord, my every desire is known to You; my sighing is not hidden from You.
My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. 10My heart races, my strength leaves me, and even the light of my eyes has faded.
Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. 11My loved ones and friends stand back from my affliction, and my relatives stand at a distance.
Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. 12Those who seek my life set traps, and those who want to harm me threaten to destroy me; they plot treachery all day long.
But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. 13I am like a deaf person; I do not hear. I am like a speechless person who does not open his mouth.
I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. 14I am like a man who does not hear and has no arguments in his mouth.
Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! 15I put my hope in You, LORD; You will answer, Lord my God.
I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. 16For I said, "Don't let them rejoice over me-- those who are arrogant toward me when I stumble."
For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. 17For I am about to fall, and my pain is constantly with me.
Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. 18So I confess my guilt; I am anxious because of my sin.
But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. 19But my enemies are vigorous and powerful; many hate me for no reason.
They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. 20Those who repay evil for good attack me for pursuing good.
Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! 21 LORD, do not abandon me; my God, do not be far from me.
Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! 22Hurry to help me, Lord, my Savior.
