So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin,1Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.2That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.3For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.4Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.5Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards. 6For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins. 8And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
Show hospitality to one another without complaining.9Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.10As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
Whoever speaks, let it be with God's words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. 11If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.13But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.14If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.15But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.16Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?17For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners? 18And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good. 19Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
