NET Bible | New International Version |
When the Canaanite king of Arad who lived in the Negev heard that Israel was approaching along the road to Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoner. | 1When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. |
So Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, "If you will indeed deliver this people into our hand, then we will utterly destroy their cities." | 2Then Israel made this vow to the LORD: "If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy their cities." |
The LORD listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of the place was called Hormah. | 3The LORD listened to Israel's plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah. |
Then they traveled from Mount Hor by the road to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom, but the people became impatient along the way. | 4They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; |
And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness, for there is no bread or water, and we detest this worthless food." | 5they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!" |
So the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people, and they bit the people; many people of Israel died. | 6Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. |
Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD that he would take away the snakes from us." So Moses prayed for the people. | 7The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people. |
The LORD said to Moses, "Make a poisonous snake and set it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will live." | 8The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live." |
So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole, so that if a snake had bitten someone, when he looked at the bronze snake he lived. | 9So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. |
The Israelites traveled on and camped in Oboth. | 10The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth. |
Then they traveled on from Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that is before Moab, on the eastern side. | 11Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab toward the sunrise. |
From there they moved on and camped in the valley of Zered. | 12From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley. |
From there they moved on and camped on the other side of the Arnon, in the wilderness that extends from the regions of the Amorites, for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. | 13They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon, which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. |
This is why it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD, "Waheb in Suphah and the wadis, the Arnon | 14That is why the Book of the Wars of the LORD says: "... Zahab in Suphah and the ravines, the Arnon |
and the slope of the valleys that extends to the dwelling of Ar, and falls off at the border of Moab." | 15and the slopes of the ravines that lead to the settlement of Ar and lie along the border of Moab." |
And from there they traveled to Beer; that is the well where the LORD spoke to Moses, "Gather the people and I will give them water." | 16From there they continued on to Beer, the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Gather the people together and I will give them water." |
Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well, sing to it! | 17Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well! Sing about it, |
The well which the princes dug, which the leaders of the people opened with their scepters and their staffs." And from the wilderness they traveled to Mattanah; | 18about the well that the princes dug, that the nobles of the people sank-- the nobles with scepters and staffs." Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, |
and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth; | 19from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, |
and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the country of Moab, near the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the wilderness. | 20and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland. |
Then Israel sent messengers to King Sihon of the Amorites, saying, | 21Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites: |
"Let us pass through your land; we will not turn aside into the fields or into the vineyards, nor will we drink water from any well, but we will go along the King's Highway until we pass your borders." | 22"Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King's Highway until we have passed through your territory." |
But Sihon did not permit Israel to pass through his border; he gathered all his forces together and went out against Israel into the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel. | 23But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel. |
But the Israelites defeated him in battle and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended. | 24Israel, however, put him to the sword and took over his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites, because their border was fortified. |
So Israel took all these cities; and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. | 25Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them, including Heshbon and all its surrounding settlements. |
For Heshbon was the city of King Sihon of the Amorites. Now he had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all of his land from his control, as far as the Arnon. | 26Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon. |
That is why those who speak in proverbs say, "Come to Heshbon, let it be built. Let the city of Sihon be established! | 27That is why the poets say: "Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt; let Sihon's city be restored. |
For fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It has consumed Ar of Moab and the lords of the high places of Arnon. | 28"Fire went out from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the citizens of Arnon's heights. |
Woe to you, Moab. You are ruined, O people of Chemosh! He has made his sons fugitives, and his daughters the prisoners of King Sihon of the Amorites. | 29Woe to you, Moab! You are destroyed, people of Chemosh! He has given up his sons as fugitives and his daughters as captives to Sihon king of the Amorites. |
We have overpowered them; Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. We have shattered them as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba." | 30"But we have overthrown them; Heshbon's dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon. We have demolished them as far as Nophah, which extends to Medeba." |
So the Israelites lived in the land of the Amorites. | 31So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites. |
Moses sent spies to reconnoiter Jaazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. | 32After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. |
Then they turned and went up by the road to Bashan. And King Og of Bashan and all his forces marched out against them to do battle at Edrei. | 33Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei. |
And the LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand. You will do to him what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon. | 34The LORD said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon." |
So they defeated Og, his sons, and all his people, until there were no survivors, and they possessed his land. | 35So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors. And they took possession of his land. |
