| 1Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. | 1So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. |
| 2For if the message spoken through angels proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received its just penalty, | 2For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished. |
| 3how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first communicated through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him, | 3So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak? |
| 4while God confirmed their witness with signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. | 4And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose. Jesus, the Man |
| 5For he did not put the world to come, about which we are speaking, under the control of angels. | 5And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about. |
| 6Instead someone testified somewhere: "What is man that you think of him or the son of man that you care for him? | 6For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him? |
| 7You made him lower than the angels for a little while. You crowned him with glory and honor. | 7Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. |
| 8You put all things under his control." For when he put all things under his control, he left nothing outside of his control. At present we do not yet see all things under his control, | 8You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority. |
| 9but we see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by God's grace he would experience death on behalf of everyone. | 9What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone. |
| 10For it was fitting for him, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. | 10God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation. |
| 11For indeed he who makes holy and those being made holy all have the same origin, and so he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, | 11So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. |
| 12saying, "I will proclaim your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you." | 12For he said to God, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” |
| 13Again he says, "I will be confident in him," and again, "Here I am, with the children God has given me." | 13He also said, “I will put my trust in him,” that is, “I and the children God has given me.” |
| 14Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he likewise shared in their humanity, so that through death he could destroy the one who holds the power of death (that is, the devil), | 14Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. |
| 15and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death. | 15Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. |
| 16For surely his concern is not for angels, but he is concerned for Abraham's descendants. | 16We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. |
| 17Therefore he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. | 17Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. |
| 18For since he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. | 18Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. |
