Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."1The man was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have had a male child with the LORD's help."
Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.2She also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground.
In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.3In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the LORD.
And Abel also brought an offering--fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,4And Abel also presented an offering--some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The LORD had regard for Abel and his offering,
but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.5but he did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent.
Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent?
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."7If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."
Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.8Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's guardian?"
The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.10Then he said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground!
Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.11So now you are cursed, alienated from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed.
When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."12If you work the ground, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear.13But Cain answered the LORD, "My punishment is too great to bear!
Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."14Since you are banishing me today from the face of the earth, and I must hide from your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me."
But the LORD said to him, "Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.15Then the LORD replied to him, "In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." And he placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him.
So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.16Then Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.17Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son.
To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.18Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.19Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah.
Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of the nomadic herdsmen.
His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.21His brother was named Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and the flute.
Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.22Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah.
Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.23Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words. For I killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."24If Cain is to be avenged seven times over, then for Lamech it will be seventy-seven times!
Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."25Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for she said, "God has given me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.26A son was born to Seth also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.
