Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James: To those who are the called, loved by God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ.
Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.2May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God's holy people.3Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write, appealing to you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all.
For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.4For some people, who were designated for this judgment long ago, have come in by stealth; they are ungodly, turning the grace of our God into sensuality and denying Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord.
Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.5Now I want to remind you, although you came to know all these things once and for all, that Jesus saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe;
And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.6and the angels who did not keep their own position but abandoned their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains in deep darkness for the judgment on the great day.
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.7Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns committed sexual immorality and perversions, and serve as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.
In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings.8In the same way these people--relying on their dreams--defile their flesh, reject authority, and slander glorious ones.
But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"9Yet when Michael the archangel was disputing with the devil in an argument about Moses's body, he did not dare utter a slanderous condemnation against him but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"
Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct--as irrational animals do--will destroy them.10But these people blaspheme anything they do not understand. And what they do understand by instinct--like irrational animals--by these things they are destroyed.
Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion.11Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, have plunged into Balaam's error for profit, and have perished in Korah's rebellion.
These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm--shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted--twice dead.12These people are dangerous reefs at your love feasts as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn--fruitless, twice dead and uprooted.
They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameful deeds; wandering stars for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever.
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones14It was about these that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied: "Look! The Lord comes with tens of thousands of his holy ones
to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him."15to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly concerning all the ungodly acts that they have done in an ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh things ungodly sinners have said against him."
These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.16These people are discontented grumblers, living according to their desires; their mouths utter arrogant words, flattering people for their own advantage.
But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.17But you, dear friends, remember what was predicted by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.
They said to you, "In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires."18They told you, "In the end time there will be scoffers living according to their own ungodly desires."
These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.19These people create divisions and are worldly, not having the Spirit.
But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,20But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.
Be merciful to those who doubt;22Have mercy on those who waver;
save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear--hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.23save others by snatching them from the fire; have mercy on others but with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy--24Now to him who is able to protect you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of his glory, without blemish and with great joy,
to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.25to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time, now and forever. Amen.
