My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, | 1My son, if you guarantee a loan for your neighbor, if you have agreed to a deal with a stranger, |
you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth. | 2trapped by your own words, and caught by your own words, |
So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go--to the point of exhaustion-- and give your neighbor no rest! | 3then do this, my son, and deliver yourself, because you have come under your neighbor's control. Go, humble yourself! Plead passionately with your neighbor! |
Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. | 4Don't allow yourself to sleep or even to close your eyes. |
Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. | 5Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a hunter's hand, or like a bird from a fowler's hand. |
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! | 6Go to the ant, you lazy man! Observe its ways and become wise. |
It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, | 7It has no commander, officer, or ruler, |
yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. | 8but prepares its provisions in the summer and gathers its food in the harvest. |
How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? | 9How long will you lie down, lazy man? When will you get up from your sleep? |
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- | 10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, |
and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man. | 11and your poverty will come on you like a bandit and your desperation like an armed man. |
A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, | 12A worthless man, a wicked man, goes around with devious speech, |
who winks maliciously with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, | 13winking with his eyes, making signs with his feet, pointing with his fingers, |
who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up conflict. | 14planning evil with a perverse mind, continually stirring up discord. |
Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy. | 15Therefore, disaster will overtake him suddenly. He will be broken in an instant, and he will never recover. |
There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: | 16Here are six things that the LORD hates— seven, in fact, are detestable to him: |
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, | 17Arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, and hands shedding innocent blood; |
a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, | 18a heart crafting evil plans, feet running swiftly to wickedness, |
a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community. | 19a false witness snorting lies, and someone sowing quarrels between brothers. |
My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching. | 20Keep your father's commands, my son, and never forsake your mother's rules, |
Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. | 21by binding them to your heart continuously, fastening them around your neck. |
When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. | 22During your travels wisdom will lead you; she will watch over you while you rest; and when you are startled from your sleep, she will commune with you. |
For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life, | 23Because the command is a lamp and the Law a light, rebukes that discipline are a way of life— |
keeping you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman. | 24to protect you from the evil woman, from the words of the seductive woman. |
Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes. | 25Do not focus on her beauty in your mind, nor allow her to take you prisoner with her flirting eyes, |
For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man's wife preys on your very life. | 26because the price of a whore is a loaf of bread, and an adulterous woman stalks a man's precious life. |
Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? | 27Can a man scoop fire into his bosom without burning his clothes? |
Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? | 28Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet? |
So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. | 29So also is it with someone who has sex with his neighbor's wife; anyone touching her will not remain unpunished. |
People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. | 30A thief isn't despised if he steals to meet his needs when he is hungry, |
Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. | 31but when he is discovered, he must restore seven-fold, forfeiting the entire value of his house. |
But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself. | 32Whoever commits adultery with a woman is out of his mind; by doing so he corrupts his own soul. |
Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away. | 33He will receive a beating and dishonor, and his shame won't disappear, |
For jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. | 34because jealousy incites a strong man's rage, and he will show no mercy when it's time for revenge. |
He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is. | 35He will not consider any payment, nor will he be willing to accept it, no matter how large the bribe. |
