For the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? | 1For the choir director; upon Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. |
My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. | 2O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. |
Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. | 3Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel. |
In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. | 4In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You delivered them. |
To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. | 5To You they cried out and were delivered; In You they trusted and were not disappointed. |
But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. | 6But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. |
All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. | 7All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, |
"He trusts in the LORD," they say, "let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." | 8"Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him." |
Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast. | 9Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother's breasts. |
From birth I was cast on you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. | 10Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother's womb. |
Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. | 11Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help. |
Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. | 12Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. |
Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. | 13They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion. |
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. | 14I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. |
My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. | 15My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death. |
Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. | 16For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. |
All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. | 17I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; |
They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. | 18They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots. |
But you, LORD, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. | 19But You, O LORD, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance. |
Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. | 20Deliver my soul from the sword, My only life from the power of the dog. |
Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen. | 21Save me from the lion's mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me. |
I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. | 22I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. |
You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! | 23You who fear the LORD, praise Him; All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel. |
For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. | 24For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard. |
From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows. | 25From You comes my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him. |
The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him-- may your hearts live forever! | 26The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever! |
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, | 27All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. |
for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations. | 28For the kingdom is the LORD'S And He rules over the nations. |
All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him-- those who cannot keep themselves alive. | 29All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive. |
Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. | 30Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. |
They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it! | 31They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it. |
