Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:
"When will you end these speeches? Be sensible, and then we can talk.2"How long until you make an end of words? You must consider, and then we can talk.
Why are we regarded as cattle and considered stupid in your sight?3Why should we be regarded as beasts, and considered stupid in your sight?
You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, is the earth to be abandoned for your sake? Or must the rocks be moved from their place?4You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, will the earth be abandoned for your sake? Or will a rock be moved from its place?
"The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out; the flame of his fire stops burning.5"Yes, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished; his flame of fire does not shine.
The light in his tent becomes dark; the lamp beside him goes out.6The light in his tent grows dark; his lamp above him is extinguished.
The vigor of his step is weakened; his own schemes throw him down.7His vigorous steps are restricted, and his own counsel throws him down.
His feet thrust him into a net; he wanders into its mesh.8For he has been thrown into a net by his feet and he wanders into a mesh.
A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare holds him fast.9A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare grips him.
A noose is hidden for him on the ground; a trap lies in his path.10A rope is hidden for him on the ground and a trap for him lies on the path.
Terrors startle him on every side and dog his every step.11Terrors frighten him on all sides and dog his every step.
Calamity is hungry for him; disaster is ready for him when he falls.12Calamity is hungry for him, and misfortune is ready at his side.
It eats away parts of his skin; death's firstborn devours his limbs.13It eats away parts of his skin; the most terrible death devours his limbs.
He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors.14He is dragged from the security of his tent, and marched off to the king of terrors.
Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling.15Fire resides in his tent; over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.
His roots dry up below and his branches wither above.16Below his roots dry up, and his branches wither above.
The memory of him perishes from the earth; he has no name in the land.17His memory perishes from the earth, he has no name in the land.
He is driven from light into the realm of darkness and is banished from the world.18He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.
He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived.19He has neither children nor descendants among his people, no survivor in those places he once stayed.
People of the west are appalled at his fate; those of the east are seized with horror.20People of the west are appalled at his fate; people of the east are seized with horror, saying,
Surely such is the dwelling of an evil man; such is the place of one who does not know God."21Surely such is the residence of an evil man; and this is the place of one who has not known God.'"
