| 1After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. | 1After this Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He stayed out of Judea because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him. |
| 2But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, | 2Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near. |
| 3Jesus' brothers said to him, "Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. | 3So Jesus' brothers advised him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing. |
| 4No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." | 4For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." |
| 5For even his own brothers did not believe in him. | 5(For not even his own brothers believed in him.) |
| 6Therefore Jesus told them, "My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. | 6So Jesus replied, "My time has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity! |

| 11Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, "Where is he?" | 11So the Jewish leaders were looking for him at the feast, asking, "Where is he?" |
| 12Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, "He is a good man." Others replied, "No, he deceives the people." | 12There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," but others, "He deceives the common people." |
| 13But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders. | 13However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders. |
| 14Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. | 14When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach. |
| 15The Jews there were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having been taught?" | 15Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said, "How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?" |
| 16Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. | 16So Jesus replied, "My teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me. |
| 17Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. | 17If anyone wants to do God's will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority. |
| 18Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. | 18The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him. |
| 19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" | 19Hasn't Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill me?" |
| 20"You are demon-possessed," the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?" | 20The crowd answered, "You're possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?" |
| 21Jesus said to them, "I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. | 21Jesus replied, "I performed one miracle and you are all amazed. |
| 22Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. | 22However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child on the Sabbath. |
| 23Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man's whole body on the Sabbath? | 23But if a male child is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? |
| 24Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly." | 24Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment." |
| 25At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? | 25Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? |
| 26Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? | 26Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him. Do the rulers really know that this man is the Christ? |
| 27But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from." | 27But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from." |
| 28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. And I have not come on my own initiative, but the one who sent me is true. You do not know him, |
| 29but I know him because I am from him and he sent me." | 29but I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me." |
| 30At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. | 30So then they tried to seize Jesus, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. |
| 31Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?" | 31Yet many of the crowd believed in him and said, "Whenever the Christ comes, he won't perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?" |
| 32The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. | 32The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Jesus, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. |
| 33Jesus said, "I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. | 33Then Jesus said, "I will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me. |

| 35The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he? |
| 36What did he mean when he said, 'You will look for me, but you will not find me,' and 'Where I am, you cannot come'?" | 36What did he mean by saying, 'You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?" |
| 37On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. | 37On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and |
| 38Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them." | 38let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.'" |
| 39By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. | 41Others said, "He is the Messiah." Still others asked, "How can the Messiah come from Galilee? | 41Others said, "This is the Christ!" But still others said, "No, for the Christ doesn't come from Galilee, does he? |
| 42Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David's descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" | 42Don't the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendant of David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?" |
| 43Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. | 43So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus. |
| 44Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. | 44Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. |
| 45Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?" | 45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him back with you?" |
| 46"No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards replied. | 46The officers replied, "No one ever spoke like this man!" |
| 47"You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted. | 47Then the Pharisees answered, "You haven't been deceived too, have you? |
| 48"Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? | 48None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they? |
| 49No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse on them." | 49But this rabble who do not know the law are accursed!" |
| 50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, | 50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before and who was one of the rulers, said, |
| 51"Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?" | 51"Our law doesn't condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?" |
| 52They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee." | 52They replied, "You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!" |
