New International Version | NET Bible |
The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. | 1Now the Reubenites and the Gadites possessed a very large number of cattle. When they saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were ideal for cattle, |
So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, | 2the Gadites and the Reubenites came and addressed Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community. They said, |
"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon-- | 3"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, |
the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel--are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock. | 4the land that the LORD subdued before the community of Israel, is ideal for cattle, and your servants have cattle." |
If we have found favor in your eyes," they said, "let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan." | 5So they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for our inheritance. Do not have us cross the Jordan River." |
Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here? | 6Moses said to the Gadites and the Reubenites, "Must your brothers go to war while you remain here? |
Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the LORD has given them? | 7Why do you frustrate the intent of the Israelites to cross over into the land which the LORD has given them? |
This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land. | 8Your fathers did the same thing when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. |
After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them. | 9When they went up to the Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they frustrated the intent of the Israelites so that they did not enter the land that the LORD had given them. |
The LORD's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath: | 10So the anger of the LORD was kindled that day, and he swore, |
Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more when they came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-- | 11Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old and upward who came from Egypt will see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, |
not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.' | 12except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.' |
The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone. | 13So the LORD's anger was kindled against the Israelites, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all that generation that had done wickedly before the LORD was finished. |
"And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel. | 14Now look, you are standing in your fathers' place, a brood of sinners, to increase still further the fierce wrath of the LORD against the Israelites. |
If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction." | 15For if you turn away from following him, he will once again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will be the reason for their destruction." |
Then they came up to him and said, "We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children. | 16Then they came very close to him and said, "We will build sheep folds here for our flocks and cities for our families, |
But we will arm ourselves for battle and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. | 17but we will maintain ourselves in armed readiness and go before the Israelites until whenever we have brought them to their place. Our descendants will be living in fortified towns as a protection against the inhabitants of the land. |
We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance. | 18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has his inheritance. |
We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan." | 19For we will not accept any inheritance on the other side of the Jordan River and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this eastern side of the Jordan." |
Then Moses said to them, "If you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle | 20Then Moses replied, "If you will do this thing, and if you will arm yourselves for battle before the LORD, |
and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him-- | 21and if all your armed men cross the Jordan before the LORD until he drives out his enemies from his presence |
then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD. | 22and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you may return and be free of your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. This land will then be your possession in the LORD's sight. |
"But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. | 23"But if you do not do this, then look, you will have sinned against the LORD. And know that your sin will find you out. |
Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised." | 24So build cities for your descendants and pens for your sheep, but do what you have said you would do." |
The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, "We your servants will do as our lord commands. | 25So the Gadites and the Reubenites replied to Moses, "Your servants will do as my lord commands. |
Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead. | 26Our children, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead, |
But your servants, every man who is armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says." | 27but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, to do battle in the LORD's presence, just as my lord says." |
Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes. | 28So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the families of the Israelite tribes. |
He said to them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession. | 29Moses said to them: "If the Gadites and the Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, each one equipped for battle in the LORD's presence, and you conquer the land, then you must allot them the territory of Gilead as their possession. |
But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan." | 30But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must receive possessions among you in Canaan." |
The Gadites and Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has said. | 31Then the Gadites and the Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has spoken. |
We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan." | 32We will cross armed in the LORD's presence into the land of Canaan, and then the possession of our inheritance that we inherit will be ours on this side of the Jordan River." |
Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them. | 33So Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the realm of King Sihon of the Amorites, and the realm of King Og of Bashan, the entire land with its cities and the territory surrounding them. |
The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, | 34The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, |
Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, | 35Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, |
Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks. | 36Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and constructed pens for their flocks. |
And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim, | 37The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, |
as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt. | 38Nebo, Baal Meon (with a change of name), and Sibmah. They renamed the cities they built. |
The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there. | 39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. |
So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. | 40So Moses gave Gilead to Machir, son of Manasseh, and he lived there. |
Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair. | 41Now Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their small towns and named them Havvoth Jair. |
And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself. | 42Then Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages and called it Nobah after his own name. |
