After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him.1After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.
Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand.2However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing.3So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.
For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”4For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”
For even His brothers did not believe in Him.5For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.
Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.6Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.
You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.”8Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”
When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.9Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.
But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.10But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.
Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?”11So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”
And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.”12Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”
However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.13Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.
Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.14About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.
And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”15The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”
Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.16“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.17If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.18He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.
Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
The people answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”20“You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel.21Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.22But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?23If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?
Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”24Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”
Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill?25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ?26Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”27But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”
Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”29but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.30So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
And many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”31Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him.32When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
Then Jesus said to them, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me.33So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.”34You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?35At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”36What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.37On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”38Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’ ”
But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.39He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.”40On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee?41Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?
Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”42Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
So there was a division among the people because of Him.43So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”46“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.
Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived?47“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.
Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”49But this crowd that does not know the law, they are under a curse.”
Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them,50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
And everyone went to his own house.53Then each went to his own home.
